Would you trade Cam Newton for Cleveland's 2 Number 1 picks?

Honestly, if I'm DG, yes, you make that trade.

You would likely have two top 10's and a 25-28 or so pick.

If you are bringing in a new HC and full coaching staff, that is a lot to work with after blowing this roster up.

That said, will never, ever happen.

I'd agree that you have to consider an offer like that, even if you ultimately don't take it.

Me? I'd probably trade my mother for two first round picks (God rest her soul) but given that the Broncos got more than that for Cutler, Gettleman could be wise to be greedy.

To be clear though, you only do this if you have come to believe Newton is not the franchise QB you thought he was.

So that becomes the heart of the question: Do you believe that or not?

If your head coach/QB combo is 2-14 in games decided by 7 points or less that goes beyond the coach.  Rivera's not out there with the ball in his hands.  Cam Newton has not shown he's a clutch QB and may never be.  So if you've got a chance to get a huge return for him now before he ultimately gets Josh Freeman'ed, then yes you take that offer.

if you actually break down those 16 games, you would realize how many of them Cam actually gave us a lead in the 4th quarter only to have it lost by the defense.  Teeray had an awesome post detailing this, and I feel like he should update it and we should get it stickied so we can refer back to it.

Cam Newton has made a big impact in his career to date. In his rookie season he broke records. When you tally up Cam's TDs to date, only Dan Marino had more at this stage in his career. He's still developing as a QB, and he has never truly had a great supporting cast. I hope that Gettleman decides to build around Cam. He needs weapons and better protection. If Gettleman puts together a great supporting cast, then Cam should thrive and [arguably] become a borderline to elite QB. 
 
That being said, the variable in all of this is Gettleman. One of things that Gettleman clearly stated earlier this year was that his ideal QB is a pocket passer:

 

"Ten of the 12 teams in the play offs this year had true pocket passers... At the end of the day, the quarterback has to make plays from the pocket. I think the red option is an option. But at the end of the day, your quarterback has got to make plays from the pocket, and if he can't, you're going to struggle."

 

When you look at Gettleman's comment it is pretty revealing in what he is looking for in his QB to be able to do. So far this season it appears that Cam has started to make the transition towards running less and making more throws from the pocket [or at least trying to]. In regards to rushing he is on pace for:

 

- 80 carries, which is 46 (2011) and 47 (2012) less carries than his first two seasons.

- 492.8 yards, which 213.2 (2011) and 248.2 (2012) less yards. 

- 4 rushing TDs, which is 10 (2011) and 4 (2012) less rushing TDs. 

 

Now running less isn't a problem if Cam improves his productivity from the pocket, but so far some of his passing statistics do not suggest such an improvement. His accuracy and average yards per attempt are the lowest they have been in his career to date. His INT percentage is the highest it has been in his career. The main improvement so far this season is that his passing TD percentage is higher, and while that has him on pace for 24 passing TDs (3 better than 2011 and 5 better than 2012), these passing TDs may end up not increasing his total out put because he is on pace to lose rushing TDs. So far Cam has been inconsistent, though he hasn't been helped with a lacklustre support from his offensive players, and being the joint third most sacked QB.

 

My point?

 

As much as I want to say Cam Newton is this team's long term QB, I think it would be difficult to say that with any certainty. The thing that strikes me with Gettleman is that he wants to build his team. He wants to have his mark on it. He has already shown his business like attitude by showing long term Panthers Chris Gamble and Jon Beason the door, to name two. So do I think Gettleman would trade Cam Newton if he believed it was the right move to take this team forwards?

 

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your disposition, I think the answer to that question is unquestionably yes. 

 

Gettleman will do what he thinks is best. If he is offered a deal where the Browns send us both of their first round picks in the 2014 draft, plus their first round pick in 2015, and then a second round pick in 2014 and/or 2015 - then that would give Gettleman five first round and three or four second round picks to help build his team. Now that might not seem like a likely scenario to most, but Cam is in the third year or a four year contract, and at some point Gettleman needs to make a decision on what he does with Cam Newton. If this team does not turn around this season, and Cam does not take a big enough step forward to becoming a better pocket passer, then Gettleman might decide that it is more beneficial for this team to sell while Cam's value is still relatively high, than it is to place his hopes on Cam realizing his potential. Cam is talented, but at the same time, he is not irreplaceable. 

 

At this point I must emphasize that I do not want to see Cam leave. I personally hope that he can be our franchise quarterback and lead this team back to a super bowl victory in the future. But at the same time, I am a Panthers fan first and foremost. So if trading Cam allows Gettleman to draft his QB, plus other top talent to improve this team, and help it move to being a perennial play off contender, then so  be it because ultimately this franchise is bigger than any single player. That being said, I don't think Cam will leave.
