Do you think this will/should be Smitty's last year as a Panther?

This is by far the worst thread I have read in months... I can remember back in 08/09 I was considered the worst poster on this forum. Most people would probably refer to that as "the good ol days" now.

I don't even actually blame you.. This is the norm now....

Thought he had a great game today. There will always be a place for Steve Smith's in this league... he can play another 3 years on this team... Just not as the #1. If we were to get a true #1 in the draft or opposite smith as a free agent, it would rejuvenate him. he can't be a #1 anymore I don't believe, but I hope this isn't his last year and dont believe it should be.

Loved seeing him knock the poo out of a guy today and also mixing it up and fighting after plays like he usually does. I would miss the hell out of that.

I think this is 89's last year as #1. Ginn will be resigned and smitty will go inside, as he's lobbied for for a couple of years. That leaves Lafell/Ginn to battle for the #1 spot. We won't draft a wr, we'll be drafting OL.

Agreed.  Smith is the ultimate slot, and his contract number really isn't that high. He said he wants to play 2 more seasons after this one, and I say we give it him.  Although I disagree, depending on FA of course, I think we should target WR in round 1 and OL in FA.

No.

Even if we only took money into account, it wouldnt make sense.

YEAR BASE S. BONUS MISC. CAP HIT DEAD

2012 1,000,000 3,550,000 2,963,111 7,513,111 16,800,000

2013 3,750,000 2,000,000 - 5,750,000 11,750,000

2014 4,000,000 2,000,000 1,000,000 7,000,000 9,000,000

2015 7,000,000 2,000,000 1,000,000 10,000,000 6,000,000

2016 9,000,000 2,000,000 1,000,000 12,000,000 3,000,000

2014 There would be more dead money than what we would save from cutting him.

In 2015 we could cut him and save 4 mil, but he's the leader of this team. You can't replace Smitty's fire. There literally isn't one player in the NFL that has it. If he continues to drop off considerably, I could see him taking a pay cut, but I really, really doubt he is cut in 2015.

2016 is a player option. If he is performing poorly at that point (doubtful) he may not elect to use it. We wouldn't lose much by cutting him then if we chose either.

Depending on how the draft shakes out, and this is what I lobbied for with defensive tackle for years and years and years and GD years, I think until someone actually proves themselves, we should fortify the receiver and secondary corps as much as possible.  Steve doesn't have much left, and Lafell is very uneven.  Ginn's stint here may prove to just be an anomaly.  There's no telling who we could get in the draft since it's such a variable process, and our early drafting seems to be turning around.  We're going to face another strapped year and so I doubt we'll get too much of anyone valuable in FA, so we're going to have to bite the bullet in the draft.  That's the problem though, in that oline could always use more tackle and guard talent and I'm not in love with Olsen as anything other than a 2 TE.  The last time we took multiple receivers in a draft, only Lafell panned out to a degree.  Maybe another young TE and a wr, then fill whatever line holes and secondary holes we have after that..

In short---Steve Smith's last year as a Panther should be up to him because he's one of the very rare players we've ever had who deserve to be afforded that honor.

    • You don’t even need 1b because Tepper is the only one foolish enough to wheel that deal.    Player wise? Jake’s elbow. JR and Pep getting sideways, no Carruth, Cam’s shoulder, Luke’s concussions, it would be a long list of stuff. You can take it down to certain plays in games. Fox chasing 2 point conversions in the SB would be on my list. RMJr slipping at the end of that same game was not helpful.
    • Ultimately this just amounts to heavy revisionist history. I mean you aren't talking to someone that just popped out the womb a week ago. I was here all throughout the predraft process. The overwhelming majority of the fanbase felt like this was a fine situation and the best situation for a rookie QB to go to compared to Houston for example. The hype for Young and our "rockstar" staff was off the charts. No one could dare speak cautious skepticism of his abilities or they would be neg repped into oblivion. Only after he had one of statistical worst rookie seasons of the last 25 years did we get this narrative now that his rookie season actually shouldn't count. Complete malarkey if you ask me.
    • On the field? Since I guess it qualifies as multiple instances it might not count, but have the damn refs throw some flags on illegal hits to Cam's head in SB50. If that doesn't count, 1A. Cotchery caught it 1B. Kasey keeps that kickoff inbounds. Off the field? 1A. Team is sold to anyone but Tepper 1B. We have the patience not to mortgage the franchise on that Bryce trade. Stroudwpuldve been the better pick but he's not worth it either.
