Should trading Hardy be considered?

Depends on how contract negotiations are going behind the scenes.  If it looks like resigning him is out of the question, then we should absolutely be shopping him.

Unless Gettleman has plans to do something with CJ's deal or potentially release him after the season to give Hardy what he wants.  I'm not sure of the terms of CJ's deal and even if releasing him is a feasible cap space option.

If we have no chance of resigning him then, you trade him. We need someone who is productive every game, not someone who shows up for a monster game when he pleases.

Yep.  I'd at least throw an adequate contract at him and see what he thinks.  Hurney ain't the GM anymore haha

Assuming we can get him for a slightly decent price, you do it. I love shiny new draft picks as much as anyone but this defense is performing lights out. Unless he is asking for something outrageous, you put your money down to keep this defense performing the way it is. By putting that money into Hardy, you're putting that money into the secondary as well. The pass rush is what is making this band-aid secondary look legit. So not only are you buying Hardy, but, in a sense, a solid secondary as well.

Then, as far as trading him for draft picks (or players), there's two problems with that:

1) We know what Hardy is and even a first round pick is an uncertainty. A bird in the hand...

2) If we can't re-sign him because he's asking too much, it's unlikely that a team is going to trade anything with high value for him knowing that they may not be able to re-sign him either.

We probably have the best front 7 in the NFL right now.

I think we are probably the number 1 over all defense in the league.

Hardy is a young talented DE .. a know commodity.

and you want to trade him?   Just because he doesn't get 3 sacks everyday doesn't mean he isn't an integral part of our defense.  I don't understand the thinking behind this idea.

Then again.. thinking on it more.   It's the Beason scenario, we can't let him go for nothing.   If the deal isn't reasonable for both sides then I think a trade would be the way to go.  However how much trade value would he have now?  This is the last year of his deal.  Anyone seriously interested in him would do better to wait for the year to end and go after him as a FA.

    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
