What a long, strange trip it’s been. “Think about it,” Smith said. “It’s been five years since we were in this position. Cam’s in some college somewhere—Florida, Blinn [junior college], I don’t know. [Newton was a Florida sophomore in 2008.] Star’s probably just getting out of high school then. He’s probably working some after-school job. Luke’s trying to become a great college player. Those guys have become key guys for us, and they’re all so young.”

Smith turned into a player-coach a couple times this week. During walk-through sessions before practice he stepped across from his fellow Panthers receivers and said, “This is what I see from the film.” He showed Brandon LaFell and Ted Ginn Jr., among others, what he’d picked up from studying San Francisco’s cornerbacks. Smith said he watched every pass thrown against the Niners this year, and picked up some tips about the San Francisco corners that he passed along to his receiving mates.

I asked Smith if the Panthers were ready for a game of this magnitude.

“I think this team is ready to play a game like this,” he said. “The intensity of it will be good for some of our young players. It’ll wake some of them up. I think it’ll be a chippy game, which is in my element. Good old-fashioned football

Love Steve Smith.

Maybe I'm reading what he's saying incorrectly but I just can't say I like this kind of talk. This isn't the super bowl. this isn't a signature win.  this is next up on our list of victims, this time with people thinking we're frauds.

I'm sure Smith gets that. Hope the rest of the team does.

What he is saying is this is a HUGE game and the first time these young players have been in this position and it will be interesting to see how they all handle it. It will be a signature win because it could be a swing game: playoffs or no playoffs. it is not just next up....is it next game up in your mind? or is it huge? in my mind its HUGE

I get what your saying and I see it ...yes we are a great team but we are still pinching ourselves asking if this is for real? if we win.....it is for real. If we lose....we work harder and make it for real again

It's big. But I'm not in awe of the situation and stuff like this makes it sound like the players are. Winning is what teams are supposed to do. This isn't some rare opportunity we have been afforded, this is something we earned and the team should be pissed off at the very idea that somebody would try and take it from them, Especially after hearing outside sources downplay us and trash us all week.

Im with you...... I think we are the better team. I am worried about the dink and dunk of brady and brees. Def not as concerned about a team like ours that isnt as good. However they know this game will make us media darlings and put us on the map that we should have already been on

You are reading it incorrectly.

    • Possible, he is physical and a forchecker but not a needle mover, but i wouldnt mind it, although I think we have enough 4th line grinders right now between Carrier Robinson and Janakowski  down there, i actually really love our 4th line.            We need scoring in the top 6, and a RHD at this point its definitely coming via trade.            Rasmus Andersson I hear may be on the market, it feels like every couple of seasons someone links us to Erik Karlsson.       As far as centers go,  Marco Rossi (even though we have a ton of smurf already)     Jordan Kyrou is an intriguing option if he is available.           At this point i think Rod should just move Jarvis to his natural center position to give us a 1B center...   yes hes also a smurf but he plays way bigger than he is stylistically.

    • The problem with these summary stats and rankings is that they flatten out progression and assume an even performance throughout the year. His first 3 or 4 games of the season don't really tell you anything about his current level of capacity but more about where he started and what his floor was last year. Given his last several games were against playoff teams, that gives you an idea of his current ability coming into the season. But it will serve more as a floor than a ceiling given the upgrade in talent on offense. And a better defense should give us more stops which results in shorter fields and more opportunities. And going into his third year there is no reason to suspect he will regress. His success wasn't  based on being superhuman but being smart and taking what was the defense was giving him. Distributing to the other guys not trying to do it on his own. He was great at the end when pressured and consistently moved the ball. That makes him a great game manager which is what we need. Something that is easier to do and relies on everyone else rather than having to be a top physical specimen or do it on his own. No one can predict the future but to say we haven't improved much is crazy given just having the Browns anchoring the defensive line will shut down the run and make sure QBs won't be stepping up in the pocket.  Assuming Evero got the message to can the prevent defense and bend until you break philosophy.
