My thoughts on tonight's game

I won't go into the last play in detail, but I do feel we got away with that one a bit.  What I will talk about in a little more detail is what we need to work on, specifically in the off season.  The offense had a good game.  They really stepped up with the defense struggling to stop Brady.

On Cam- His play was money tonight.  He kept drives going whether it was with his arm or with his legs.  He's still working on his accuracy in year three.  I'd be lying if I said him missing wide open receivers on short passes doesn't bother me, but Cam has definitely improved.  At this juncture in Cam's career, his strength in throwing the ball is the big play pass.  Every pass Cam throw is almost a rocket.  So I would like to see him master hitting receivers down the field for the big play, and continue to work on becoming a full passer.

Yet this O-line needs overhauling in the off season.  We struggled to get good run blocking against a d-line that's missing two of it's starters, one of them being Vince Wilfork.  These guys couldn't beat an undrafted nose tackle off the point of attack? (I liked Joe Vellano coming out of college by the way)  Yeah, we need O-lineman.

On defensive play- They hung tough with a hall of fame QB.  Managed to get two sacks, a force fumble, and an interception to end the game.  They didn't have their best game, but it was good nonetheless.  However, this game shows us immensly that we need to overhaul a good bit of our secondary.  Tom picked apart Melvin White like nobody's business.  No doubt it was because of our secondary, that we couldn't get a great pass rush going against the Patriots.

I felt like our defensive tackles were getting a good push against the run, but for some reason New England's backs slipped through some tackles and picked up yards.  That part I feel like we can clean up in this season.

My expectations after this game- Good.  Our defense is great and our offense has big play potential.  Even with the problems we have, we are still one of the best teams in the league and we proved it tonight.

I agree about the o-line but I think they do a hell of a job in pass protection. Cam doesn't get rushed too often.

I'm not sure if Wharton is on a 1 year deal but we need to keep him. We could take a 1st round tackle, let Gross play LT one more year. The interior of the line should be stout with Amini coming back, plus Kalil, plus the prospect of Bell moving inside.

Chris Scott is a pretty good run blocker and we missed him tonight as well. Nate Chandler could actually be a decent player.

Want to point out that deep ball to Smith in the first (where Talib got the flag) where Cam actually lobbed it instead of trying to laser it through Talib's head. That right there shows you he's working on his touch passes some and it's nice to see.

The fact we are using a converted DT as our starting G says it all. I was just amazed at what they have done with nothing.

Yeah Tom Brady mentioned they didn't play their best. I feel the same way about the Panthers. On Defense there were a ton of missed tackles. New England ran for a but load of yards after contact in this game. That is unacceptable if the Panthers want to remain #1 defensively.

He also got time in the Pocket. We saw Brady lazer passes also when he was under pressure.

I'm not sold on Amini.  I was thinking perhaps we need to draft a guard with one of our first two picks, and guy that excels at run blocking.  We will need to have a good running game with Cam still struggling a little bit with his accuracy.

    • Possible, he is physical and a forchecker but not a needle mover, but i wouldnt mind it, although I think we have enough 4th line grinders right now between Carrier Robinson and Janakowski  down there, i actually really love our 4th line.            We need scoring in the top 6, and a RHD at this point its definitely coming via trade.            Rasmus Andersson I hear may be on the market, it feels like every couple of seasons someone links us to Erik Karlsson.       As far as centers go,  Marco Rossi (even though we have a ton of smurf already)     Jordan Kyrou is an intriguing option if he is available.           At this point i think Rod should just move Jarvis to his natural center position to give us a 1B center...   yes hes also a smurf but he plays way bigger than he is stylistically.

    • The problem with these summary stats and rankings is that they flatten out progression and assume an even performance throughout the year. His first 3 or 4 games of the season don't really tell you anything about his current level of capacity but more about where he started and what his floor was last year. Given his last several games were against playoff teams, that gives you an idea of his current ability coming into the season. But it will serve more as a floor than a ceiling given the upgrade in talent on offense. And a better defense should give us more stops which results in shorter fields and more opportunities. And going into his third year there is no reason to suspect he will regress. His success wasn't  based on being superhuman but being smart and taking what was the defense was giving him. Distributing to the other guys not trying to do it on his own. He was great at the end when pressured and consistently moved the ball. That makes him a great game manager which is what we need. Something that is easier to do and relies on everyone else rather than having to be a top physical specimen or do it on his own. No one can predict the future but to say we haven't improved much is crazy given just having the Browns anchoring the defensive line will shut down the run and make sure QBs won't be stepping up in the pocket.  Assuming Evero got the message to can the prevent defense and bend until you break philosophy.
