A tactical false start?

From the Panthers blurb on the new SBN power rankings:

4. Carolina Panthers

Going for it on fourth down? That's fine and good, but not really special. Taking a tactical false start so that speed burner Ted Ginn would have room to catch a game-winning 25-yard TD? That's some advanced stuff, there - Ron Rivera is playing chess while everyone else plays checkers.  Of course, it helps that Cam Newton is playing great ball and making poised, accurate throws while the Panthers defense mauls just about everyone they see. Stevan Ridley's goal line fumble might have been a key to their victory, but to the victors go the spoils - and the coveted #4 spot in the Power Rankings. (Last Week: 6)

Did anyone else see this? Is there a team source that indicated as much? I watched the post-game presser and his press conference yesterday and don't remember this being mentioned. Nor do I remember reading it elsewhere. I've heard of taking penalties to give your kicker a better angle or your punter more room, but never this. If confirmed, RR truly is playing chess.

All I remember thinking at the time Bell got the penalty was "Fuging Byron Bell."

Ron probably called the play based on the yardage lost from the false start, but i doubt he called for the false start first.

Well Shula prob called the play, but yeah I don't think it makes sense to advocate for a penalty there. At that point we were in field goal range but the wind was tricky all night and I don't think you'd want to be potentially adding distance to a game-tying field goal attempt in those circumstances. It didn't make sense to me when I read it, either.

    • Logically yes. Boston has the right balance though. Jalen Brown is #2 in the paint and their best shooters are 17th and 19th. While our best shooters are #1 and #2 and we have one player in the top 50 for points in the paint. And my understanding looking at the information I just referenced is we were basically at the exact same paint percentage last year in Charles Lee's offense. At the end of the day we either want to compete for a playoff series winner and the finals or we just want to stumble our way to another play in. We've already done that with James Borrego.
    • We need more bigs.  I love Moose, but him coming off the bench would be ideal. Even Kalkbrenner slowed down  Duren/Stewart from my eyes.   Draft someone like 7’3 Center from Michigan Aday Mara. We have plenty of talent, we need size. I really want Yaxel and one of Mara/ Quaintance.
    • We don't need another first round WR to evaluate Bryce Young. You could give him a young Jerry Rice Randy Moss and Justin Jefferson and he would still struggle to lead the group to a top 20 passing offense because he simply cannot utilize the entire field consistently. All we're going to end up with by drafting another first round wide receiver is a disgruntled WR room. Because one there are not that many touches to go around and two the touches that will be available maybe half of them will result in good to great ball placement. And the bulk of them will be thrown at or behind the line of scrimmage. If the FO goes WR at 19 all involved might as well go ahead and start looking at other job opportunities down the line.
