Not giving up on HFA = rooting for taints?

Ive thought about this and Saints winning does only put us a couple behind the Seahawks for the conference, BUT we would have to sweep the Saints and frankly, despite how good we are. Its nearly impossible for any team to win in the Superdome in a prime time enviroment so I expect a L next Sunday. This Bucs game is more important than the Saints game in my opinion. We lose to the Bucs, then a probable loss against the Saints, we are 8-5 and in big trouble.

I have always been of the mindset of beating the Bucs tommorrow, give us a guaranteed winning record at 9 wins and everything else will fall into place.

Do what you can do to control your own destiny.  You start worrying about what the other guy is doing and you lose focus.

2003 we won our super bowl visit via the road.  We have shown we can go on the road and win the tough games.

If we make it to Seattle that means we are in the NFC Championship game.   Would be nice to payback 2005.

Seattle is up 2 with the tiebreaker, so really 3. It's extremely, extremely unlikely the Seahawks finish 2-3 or worse.

That DeAngelo fumble in Week 1 may have cost us homefield. If we beat the Seahawks, we're 9-2 right now and so are the Seahawks and we have the tiebreaker. We'd still be the #5 seed as of right now because the Saints would STILL own the NFC tiebreaker currently, but we would be RIGHT THERE for homefield. Oh well.

So no, the Saints and kinda Cardinals are the only teams we really have to care about. We're not getting homefield, we're not missing the playoffs, it's the 5 seed or 2 seed or possibly the 6 seed or bust. Root against the Saints, root against the Cardinals because they have the tiebreaker over us and getting the 5 instead of 6 could mean missing a trip to Seattle in the 2nd round.

But most of all, root for the Panthers. Win out and none of this stuff matters. We're the 2 seed.

I also thought a lot about this and came up with the same conclusion as the OP. Simply put, a loss Monday by the Saints ONLY means something if they ALSO lose to the Rams (which is possible, but not more possible than the Seahawks losing 2 more of @SF, @NYG, ARI, STL). JMO. A split with the taints and we lose the tiebreakers with them otherwise, UNLESS they lose to the Bucs, which still makes the game Monday meaningless because whether we finished tied or one game up we would WIN the division in that scenario with them having that division loss.

Bottom line, it's a win/win and hard to pull for the taints (especially considering they could really lose to the Rams), but my objective ruling based on what we know now says it's slightly better if the Seahawks lose.

First. I say we are a young team. Let's just continue to play great football. Let's just keep getting better. Let's just keep improving.

In that vein, I say, let's keep spanking whomever we play until the season ends by either a playoff loss, or a Super Bowl victory.

Second. As much as I hate not being optimistic. I just cannot wrap my head around us making a solid Super Bowl run this year. I see a team capable of the feat. I just see a long history of young teams needing a try or two before they break through. I think we have the team to make a run, I just don't think you should underestimate playoff experience.

Lastly. As been noted. Our slow start is also working against us at the moment. Another reason to believe we are just not quite ready.

But hellz, what do I know. I would be happy as punch to be wrong.

We are better in almost every way than the 2003 Super Bowl team except for one fatal flaw, we can't complete passes downfield, 15 yards past the line of scrimmage. It will be tough to win a playoff game if the middle of the field isn't open and the run game isn't working. We need speed! and receivers who can separate, and Cam needs to develop a bit more to not be afraid to take those shots
