Does it seem particularly bad to anyone else?

 

This year seems atrocious on calls.  It seems there are several games each week with blatantly awful calls being made, and the league issuing statements each week having to comment one way or the other on controversial calls.

 

What's going on?  Is anything actually different this year?  Is there too little accountability in officiating, or is the game just getting so fast it's hard for officials to keep up?

This isn't a thread about the Panthers being screwed.. at all.  We've come out relatively well on calls.

 

It's the NFL as a whole.  I don't remember a time with so many coaches being told the calls in their game were wrong, but maybe that's just because we didn't hear it...

Interestingly I dont think that the officiating is substantially worse as much as I think we are just far more informed and there is a much greater opportunity for scrutiny.  Between Red Zone Channel, Sunday Ticket, the interwebz, and the 24 hour sports networks Fans can see every second of every game and as a consequence every missed call.  A screwed up call in a game only broadcast in the home markets of the two teams doesn't get overlooked anymore.

I think it is actually worse.

 

I don't think the Panthers have been the recipient of most of the bad calls... we've actually gotten some of the breaks from it...

 

 

The one call that I think illustrates this best is the review on the first down in Miami.  Although the Panthers were the recipient of a bad call in this case, that's not why I'm mentioning it.  

How could the refs watch the play, in review no less, and rule that it was a completed pass?

The down issue in the WASH vs NY game, the admitted mistakes in the Titans vs Colts game... it seems to be an issue this year in particular.

 

There are always going to be blown calls, missed holding, etc, etc. but this year there are game changing big time mistakes being made.

Funny...it was all about non-union refs and the GreenBay/Seattle game that broke that camel's back, but not a peep nowadays. 

 

I just think the refs are throwing more flags and assigning one of them to watch the replay screens to see if it was really bad while they're huddling.  Kidding, I do think they're simply throwing more flags and pulling them back more.  Reffing is a very hard job.  I mean if you were a ref, wouldn't you have given that TD to Leveon Bell the other day?  Yes...it was by the book, but geez...the spirit of the rule is to stop the advancing offensive player from keeping going down the field putting his life at risk.  Leveon wasn't going to make anymore football moves and he scored that damned TD.

I agree that that should have been a TD, but by the current rule, they got it correct.  The rule needs changed to say that if the player is going to the ground when the helmet comes off, then the play isn't over.

The crazy thing about it is that it's happening in college football as well. The Iron Bowl go two REVIEWED plays wrong as hell. The Cooper TD that they ruled out of bounds and the QB for Auburn's TD that they called out of bounds as well. The Vernon Davis "fumble" was reviewed by Mike Pereira and he pretty much agreed with the officials saying I don't see how you could over turn that play and call it a fumble. What? Then, this guy had the nerve to say that the officials in the New England game got the last play wrong?? My respect for NFL officials is at an all time low right now.

No! It just seem the bais folks in the media seem more hell-bent on going after the Refs  out of spite. When teams like the Panthers, Texans, Chiefs, and other lesser preferred teams get bad calls, no one gives a damn. But when a call decides a game against the usual chosen teams like Dallas, Skins, Colts, Pats, Saints, Broncos, then all of a sudden the officiating is questioned the pettiness begins.

 

I remember after the Ref strike ended last season, the regular Refs were making bad calls also but those in the media, who are now screaming foul at any bad call against a preferred team, simply dismissed it.

      See this is the problem, you say "can't get off the line quick" and "can't separate quick" but in reality it's "he can get off the line better and create more separation" which are two completely different things. If he couldn't get off the line or separate, he wouldn't have put up the numbers he did and end up a Top 10 pick. But he can get better, and maybe more accurately, consistent with them both, and that will take his game to the next level.  These are things that are also much easier to improve once you get to the NFL than things like being a poor route runner or having bad hands, two of his strengths. Thinking he can't get open in the short passing game also shows you haven't watched enough tape on him, as he was used in that role so much in college with little issue getting open and making plays. And him not using his physicality as much isn't even something that hurts his game because he's so much more agile than a player of his size should be, which he used to his advantage.  Instead of throwing passes where he'd go up and box out a player like a TE or Mike Evans does, they use his athleticism and put the ball in places that only he can get to it, and he usually does (and yes, he'll still be able to do that against NFL DB's with his catch radius). But now that he's in the NFL, I'd like to see him get stronger and add that to his game because it also will help him take his game to another level. As I've said before, if he doesn't improve on those things at all, I think he's a Top 25 WR in this league, he's already that good.  But I think he'll improve on those things and be a perennial Top 10 WR and in his prime is considered and perform like Top 5 guy in some years. My expectations for him this year at 800 yards and 8 TDs (although I do think he'll get to 10 TDs) with a real chance at getting to 1,000.  But those expectations are because I think Thielen will lead the team in yards with close to 1k and XL/Coker each end up in the 500-600 range themselves, just too many mouths to feed this year for a rookie to dominate yardage, especially if we're running the ball well again. But if Thielen can't stay healthy or puts up sub 750 yards, then yea, my expectations for T-Mac likely shift to getting to 1k as a rookie.
