I said it once, I will say it again. The fan bases of black qbs do not root for them as much as they "tolerate" them as long as they are winning. Don't believe me, look at Washington for proof, look at McNabb, look a Vince Young.

 

You think our fan base would tolerate Newton if he was Matthew Stafford? What about Tannehill? or Cutler? What about Ryan? You think the Carolina fan base would even entertain the thought of giving Newton Stafford's contract with anything less than a Superbowl win? Think again.

 

The 49ers fan base does not root for Kapernick. Neither does Seattle's for Wilson. Or Washington for Griffin. In fact, much like those on this very website, SOME "fans" would prefer to lose so that said QBs can be replaced ASAP.

 

Think I am crazy, why don't you venture over to the Lions, Dolphins, or Bears message board. You will find a host of their fans defending their QB because they actually root for their individual as well as team success.

 

The same thing will happen to whatever team Teddy Bridgewater and Tahj Boyd goes too. Count Jameis Winston and Brett Hundley too. If those fan bases do not experience instant team success along with superior qb play, those fan bases will revolt...

 

Just like Carolina has/wants to do for the past 3 seasons.

I think if you give Newton a good OL and at least one legit #1 WR......he would be near unstoppable.

Bottom line is he is playing behind a weak OL, despite us being loyal to the run game it doesn't aid him much, and his WRs too often don't get open. We improve the O talent and he improves.

Also people expect too much to soon from him.....he is already ahead if where tons of now elite QBs were 3 years in.

I agree 100%....Imagine if Cam had what Jake Delhomme had. The offense would be unstoppable. Yes, Cam holds the ball too long sometimes. But at least he is going through his progressions, scanning the field. ALL the intangibles are there. He will only get better at making decisions when to throw the ball. Having some quality receivers that come back to ball and that can get open will help. So will a SOLID O-line that will give him a little more time.

There will always be people that see nothing but race (and their not all white). But I wouldn't stereotype the entire fan base that way. There are certain cultural things like towel on head, celebrating first downs, and post game press conferences that our fan base doesn't see eye to eye on. But I'd like to think this thread is about performance. I'd like to think we don't evaluate performance with racial bias.

Well yeah every college player that does something gets hated on. Tom Brady cuss everybody out and the media keep it moving. Let that be Cam or another black QB and man... Luck plays poorly and I swear it's like it never happens. They STILL say he's the best young QB and he hasn't done jack poo to prove why he is. Oh give me a break man. You don't give the average fan enough credit. All that most fans care about is having a successful team. Most fans are intelligent enough to SEE if a QB (no matter what color) has the intangibles it takes to be successful. Your either a good NFL QB or you're a carrier back up. And it only takes 3 or 4 seasons to tell which.

I'm not going to lie, it was very frustrating to watch us get off to slow starts at the beginning of the last couple of seasons, and us lose so many close games, but I don't know how anyone could of missed Cam's potential after watching his rookie season.  There's still things he can do better, but he's shown positive growth each year he's been on this team.  That's all you could ask of him.  I'll be honest, he's done it faster than I thought he would.  Taking a rookie of his caliber I always thought he'd need 5 seasons before we'd know what we got with him.  Again, he's got things he can still improve, but how many QB's have taken their teams to the playoffs in 3 years?  Sure, our D is playing lights out, but he's now becoming reliable at the end of games when it counts the most.  I liked what Terry Bradshaw (this may be a first) had to say after the game today.  He said Cam may not be putting up the kind of stats he has put up in the past, but he is putting up game winning stats and that shows Cam's growth as a NFL quarterback.

With all due respect, Clausen's rookie campaign featured about 1/25 the success as Bobs.

 

The difference between Clausen and Griffin (despite his incredible Heisman year), is that when Clausen was drafted there was a PRESUMPTION that he belong in the NFL as a QB, with Griffin there is a presumption that he DOES NOT belong in the NFL as QB.

 

Zach Mettenberger will get this presumption as well...Teddy...not so much. 

 

This is the reason why Vince Young and Robert Griffin can be ROY one year and then the next "See I told you that he was a bust and we should have drafted Cutler/ Tannehill with that pick!"

I really disagree on the presumption RG3 didn't belong.  I don't think that's true at all - the media seemed pretty light on him after the crap Cam went through.  Seemed like people were actually saying about him "this is what cam should be like" or whatever for a while. boy did that change.

 

My point wasn't that RG3 and Clausen had similar rookie seasons - it's that fans will abandon white QBs that play poorly, too, even when they're anointed by the media.  

 

I haven't heard anyone say Tannehill shoulda been taking where RG3 was... That's retarded if Skins fans are saying that.

 

As for VY, I actually don't remember it very well, so I shouldn't comment.  I don't remember his time well enough to realize he was benched/in danger of being benched his 2nd year, for some reason I thought he lost his job due to an injury the year the Titans were playing crazy well with Collins.  My memory isn't serving me well, though.

Christ Carter said it best on Mike&Mike, that Cam is probably the most athletic player in the NFL but he has the pocket presence of some of the best QBs in the league. And that he stands tall in the pocket with DEs swapping his helmet but throw darts in the most pressured situation. Personally, since Cam's been in this franchise I've never seen one game where I thought he gave it away. With him I always feel like we have a chance. Give the man some weapons and watch this team be a super bowl favorite every year.

Yep! As he was saying it they were showing clip of his last drive as a defensive play took a swipe at his helmet. Awesome stuff, man!

 

update: Skip Bayless(Cam's biggest hater) just said "Cam is big time and has arrived" as I type this on firsttake. I'm loving this team
