Give up a 2015 1st round pick for franchise WR?

. . and besides, what are the odds that a WR pick even pans out? That in itself is gamble. . THEN factor in how long it might take before he's productive.

The wife has been gone all day. I am just care free.

I do believe that with the explosion of the spread in college. More WR are coming out that are able to be productive right away. However, that does not make taking one in the top of the draft a good gamble.

You take a guy with some size and speed, and then he can't run a route. You take a burner to take the top off, and he has no work ethic. Too many variables in play. Some have hit it big lately, but we are too close to be taking chances. Or at least that is my opinion.

Well right now it looks like a lot of teams will be taking an OT in the first, while possibly only three WR will be taken. I think it makes more sense to take a WR in the first and then a OT in the second.

Where we are picking, we should still get a tip flight talent. Where the kid plays? That is the question.

OTs are not the gamble WRs are. Teams feel much more comfortable going in that direction. We need both, that is a given. Going to be fun watching how Gman plays this.

Okay watched a video, but not the full drive. I think Cam went 3 of 5, including the spike, for 60ish yards so I'm missing a play.

 

First play he has a pocket for long enough for Ginn to break open, but it was collapsing fast and it looks to me like he throws off his back foot before getting hit (amazing throw). The second play moving the chains to Olsen was great though, clean and didn't get roughed up. The last as discussed was a blitz where Tolbert saves Cam from getting demolished. I need a better video, but it actually looks like Cam getting rub on his shoulder while throwing.

 

Overall not bad for our O-Line at all.

It's our most glaring need. It's becoming so obvious that most mocks are having us take a WR in the first, and every week for the last couple months even our game commentators have stated that our WRs weren't getting open enough for Cam. it especially apparent when Cam is scrambling, running sideline to sideline, and can't find an open target. I feel Cam could make those Wilson throws if he just had more targets coming open.

See...this is the quandary. Do we fix the line to give Cam more time to find receivers? Or do we take receivers to give Cam more targets?

Gman is going to be judged on how he handles this. Some will love him. Some will call him an idiot. I can't wait. Well. I can, I just don't want to.

You can find really good receivers with later picks. It's totally possible. Maybe not special AJ Green/Julio Jones type receivers, but guys with the potential to become a top 5 or top 10 WR in the league? Absolutely. Josh Gordon... Alshon Jeffery... Antonio Brown... Randall Cobb... Keenan Allen. All picked after the first round. Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant were picked in the 20's. You just need to hit on the pick, no matter where it is.

 

I am against trading picks, unless you're 99% sure you're getting the next Calvin Johnson. Panthers have hit home runs in the first round the last few years and I want that to continue.

Im glad to hear the guys who watch college are seeing more refined talent these days. Thats comforting a little. I want to take a shot at WR this year also, but like you, not at the expense of ignoring our greatest need.

 

Ginn has to be back, that guy is way too valuable to let go. Returns would crumble without him and he made a very nice deep catch yesterday. Those are very tough to make, incredibly tough. There are as many as 5 guys around that may take your head off and youre going up for the ball. They are NOT all running in the same direction as you so you may get POPPED. He makes the catch above his head, btw. Something he has been inconsistent with all year.

 

LaFell Im not sure about. LaFell seems to me a great team guy. He couldve coexisted with Smitty at anytime in his career. He's a good receiver, but. . . well everyone has their own buts about LaFell. My take is that he's not ice cold like a possession guy should be. If youre not gonna be the fastest then be the guy that always comes down with it. If youre gonna be the big guy, then represent it. Make youre presence known and enforce your size on DB's at every occasion. Harass them with it. It is power. Idk, he just doesnt fit into any molds. He's sort of amorphous like that.

 

Hixon? well kind of depends on him. I dont see why it would be a bad idea to keep him around.

Cam needs a 7 foot WR and we'd be golden.  

 

WR is most definitely the #1 need on this team.  The line is actually OK, at least in pass blocking.  Run blocking, not so sure.  Gross is having a great year actually, one of the best in years.  He used to get false starts all the time too, not this year.  The right side is the problem, and we'll get guys back from injury to help that.  Besides, you don't get stud OT/OL at the end of the first usually, but you can find WRs.   I wouldn't mind signing Nicks (reasonable) AND drafting a #1 WR.  Then OL or CB in the 2nd/3rd.  Cam needs weapons that can get open, a 34 year old WR shouldn't be his #1.

2nd play. Pass batted down. No one near him.

3rd play. Pass to Olsen for 14. No one comes near him.

4th play. Clock the ball.

5th play. 6 man blitz. Jenkins barely touches Cam.

Great drive by all concerned. Cam did get touched. But barely.

Watching the Panthers season unfold, we're wildly over-performing with the possibility of being not only the #2 team overall but #1 overall if we get a couple of breaks. All this success might all go to waste and come to an abrupt end in the playoffs because of the lack of talent in the WR position. The only thing holding us back is the WR corps. If we had a Sammy Watkins or Mike Evans on this roster I don't see how any other team in the NFC would be favorite to beat us.

 

This year we're selecting in the mid to late 20s in the draft and those days of selecting ROY candidates in the draft are gone. Our days of building through the draft is now gone because we're a playoff team our 1st rounds picks are glorified 2nd round picks. We're now the NE of the NFC, we beat teams methodically. We thrash bad teams, wear good teams down with Cam waiting at the clutch. But this is not sustainable as young team.

 

Would it be a good idea to give up a 2015 glorified 2nd round pick to move up to get our franchise WR. We really need it.
