I think Shula is out regardless of the outcome of this season

If by "out" you mean he gets another job elsewhere, then maybe. I doubt it, but it could happen.

If instead you meant he would be fired, then I think you're way off-base.

I was vehemently against the hiring of Shula, but the reality is we're now 11-4 and in the playoffs with a good chance at an NFCS title. So after that, you are going to tell Cam and Smitty and DWill that we're letting Shula go? The same guy who"s been repeatedly praised by the players for being open to input, thus creating a sense of ownership of the game plan.

Let's look at it from another angle...how many hot prospects are going to consider coming to a team that just fired their 12-4 or 11-5 first year OC?

Bad, bad idea.

I might be wrong about this, but I dont think that the coach counts against the salary cap. Meaning that Jerry can pay him what he wants without affecting the team.

I imagine a guy like Jerry starts off reasonable but pays more over time. I know Fox was getting paid pretty good, about 5 million a year I think.

No, coaches have no impact on the cap.

we don't have to fire him. we could cross-promote him to a position that fits him, like holding a bucket in a corner.

Honestly, he's not as bad as I expected. I expected we would score 10 or fewer in at least a quarter of our games. We only did it three times and managed to win one of them.

Loved Rivera from the jump!Just being a new coach had to go through his trials learning from his mistakes. Fans always seem to be in a big hurry to place blame & point the finger at the coach. One thing that I always noticed is the whole locker room always had Rivera back & even know we were loosing still played their tail off. Other then a few games we were always in most game. When you had the DTs we had what do u expect? Along with the secondary. We got the DTs & looked what happened. Sign Hardy, OLine, WR, Secondary, & Cam learning to get rid of the ball quicker I tell u what the sky the limit.

He's making about 2.8 million a year right now... I'd go 3 years, 10.5 million or so. This gives him a solid raise and 2 more years to prove himself, and if the Panthers consistently perform then it's also a short window to negotiate a bigger-money, longer-term extension.

With 10 NFL coaches making over 6 million per year , he'd be foolish to accept your 3,5/yr offer. It's going to come down to what's his relationship with Gettlemen like. We might add 1 year now at 5-6 million.

lolz.  sitting on the brink of a 12-4 season, #1 in the division and #2 in the NFC overall, and anyone would even consider firing the coach?  WTF more do you want?

for me this is easy and it's the standard i've been holding since last year.

do it again next year. back to back winning seasons.

the only thing now is he's raised the bar of expectations. i don't expect a 12 win season or division champs. i do expect playoffs.

don't give him an extension this year. let's see if he can have two successful seasons in a row...then we'll talk. until i see that, i'm not 100% all in.

Big risk. If he does win next year, we have nothing to keep him around to even talk. We hold no option for 2015, so there's nothing we can do to make him even talk. We need to add a year and tweak his number up from 3rd from the bottom of the league.

    • I’m keeping an eye on what the Hawks do with Boye Mafe. There’s a few young talented players that needs to be retained and one of their defensive starters might not fit within the budget. My guess is probably Riq Woolen is voted off the island but Mafe could be potentially too. His stats aren’t eye popping, but in McDonald’s defense, his role is to leverage for the DL to clean up. Mafe’s QB pressure rate is top notch and in a different scheme, he could clean up.    Just something to watch this weekend when SEA is in town.
    • Ok fair to judge only his starts.  But you do acknowledge that going from "he's waaaay above league average in a number of categories" to "here's a single stat where he's above league average (not "waaaay") and another where he is exactly at the league average" is a pretty significant backpedal, no?  I'm guessing he's probably in the ~10th range for completion percentage too if we're only looking at starts (I'm too lazy to isolate his starts and do the calculations), so I'll grant you that one too.  But I don't think completion percentage is all that meaningful as a standalone stat if it isn't bolstered by good TD%, Y/A, etc. On that note, for how much people like posting Passing Charts in here (*cough* CRA) - if you peep Shough's passing charts, he hasn't completed a single 20+ yard pass in the past 3 games combined.  His last one was in Week 13 against the Dolphins, which was a single pass of 24 yards.  I just want to be consistent in how we apply our standards - I think it's always been warranted to criticize Bryce for it (even dating back to his rookie season), but do we suddenly not care about that with Shough? And yeah I did acknowledge that Saints' fans have reason to be excited about him and complimented his poise, which is giving my props.  Still not sure I agree that he looks better than a "ton" of QBs nor do I think you or anyone have really demonstrated that.  I think you are generally one of the more reasonable level-headed posters which is why I'm confused at what I consider to be rather hyperbolic language about Shough.
    • I don't disagree with you, but want to point out that Tremble's strong suit has always been blocking. Case and point: on Horn's 25 yard run, he lays down not 1 but 2 nice blocks...and is looking for #3! https://www.panthers.com/video/jimmy-horn-jr-s-25-yard-run-gives-panthers-red-zone-access-on-first-drive
