Possibility for Luke to win the DPOY

Hard to replicate a historic year tho...

Plus it is DPOTY and not MVP or MVDPOTY.

Despite the rest of his team sucking he has been awesome. Just look at what he is doing.

Yes, but nobody from an awful team is going to win...rookie maybe but not otherwise

Your performance has to bring something to the success of your team. It is hard to argue the value you bring when your team sucks.no player from the Texans or Jags is going ti be in the discussion for DPOTY...lets just be real.

Why not? Again, its about performance. He's been playing well but there is only so much one player can do.

Of course he's going to get overlooked because of the team record, but he's right up there in terms of individual performance.(which is what the award is about)

Not one mention of Watt?

Anyway, don't think Luke is the DPOTY.

Quinn had been a monster. Watt has been awesome as well despite his team's record. Sherman had been good but not even Revis level tho.

I'd say

Quinn

Watt

Luke

I don't get Watt here - he doesn't even have as many sacks as Hardy... He's done more for his defense than Hardy overall, but I just don't think his season is worthy of DPOTY consideration.  Watt has "only" 9.5 sacks on the year, a far cry from his 20.5 last year.  On top of that, one of the reasons he got DPOTY last year was his passes defended, which is much lower this year, though still amazing for a DE.

Quinn on the other hand has twice as many sacks almost and has forced 7 fumbles.

Luke is near the top of the league in tackles and has a record-setting performance under his belt... but I'd still probably put him under Quinn overall.  If Keek has a big game Sunday, though, he might sneak away with DPOTY.

Then the award fails to do what it intends, which is awarding the best defensive player of the season.

Im not sure he wins it but Watt and Paul P surely dont deserve it. Watt was much better last year and Paul P is a MLB who is the captain of an insignificant defense. Luke has stats and is the leader of the definitive aspect of a top team.

panthers fans in 2012: WIN LOSS RECORD SHOULDN'T MATTER WHEN JUDGING INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES!!!!!!! DUH IDIOTS

panthers fans in 2013: ROBERT QUINN?!?!?!?! THE RAMS!?!?!??! ELL OH FUGING ELL THEY ARE LIKE 1-90 BAHAHAHA IDIOTS

Im assuming we are discussing who will actually win and not who is worthy. Rookie awards seem to be individual while all around implies a larger influence.

Overate? Kuechly piling up tackling numbers only speaks volumes about his instincts and motor. He's got Star, Short, Hardy, Johnson and Davis playing beside him and Luke is still in the Top 5 for tackles. His biggest and most important intangible isn't found on NFL.com. Take a look on opposing fansites. Once in awhile there'll be a poster who will point out Keek's unreal ability to diagnose a play, counter an audible, and direct the entire defense into confusing the opposing offense.

You wanna know why our defense has taken a leap forward so fast? Look no further than Luke Kuechly.

People are using tackles as a gold standard when its notorious that guys get credited for just being there. I put much more stock into defensive stops where there is a tackle for loss or minimal gain.

And for your last point on coordinating the D, I fully agree. Nowhere did I even say that Luke is overrated or he is not of huge importantce to our D... My point was ppl are using tackles as some sort of huge factor.

Luke problems has come in coverage(tho some of that is overstated cuz we play a lot of zone) and he isn't that great at getting to the QB like other ILB. And some missed tackles here and there.

He's definitely the best run defender and has elite instincts. I'd say he's the best ILB of the year but not in front of Quinn for DPOTY.

Watt is still putting a ton of pressure on the QB. He's tops in hits and hurries. He'd have more sacks if he had better play from the rest of the line for sure.(seen enough games where watt would've gotten a sack but the QB avoids it) I also won't hold what he did last year against him. That's totally unfair.

And I have Quinn ahead of Watt.

Meh on the use of tackles as a reason to win DPOTy. Now stops is much better and Luke is top 5.

Im not sure he wins it but Watt and Paul P surely dont deserve it. Watt was much better last year and Paul P is a MLB who is the captain of an insignificant defense. Luke has stats and is the leader of the definitive aspect of a top team.

Who cares what Watt did last year? We're talking about this year.

I don't think Poslusney should win it either. He shouldn't be in the discussion but not because of his team's record.

Not disputing Luke's importance to our D at all.....

Aren't sacks viewed as the golden standard too? I mean Aldon Smith was the frontrunner for DPOY (despite being a poor run defender) before Justin Smith got injured. After that, Aldon never got near another sack until the 2013 season.

I think Quinn is very deserving of DPOY but it's close between him and Luke.

Sack>>>a regular tackle. Only tackle close to comparable to a sack is a tackle for loss...

Obvious the importance of a sack but hits ans hurries are important/factors too.

Aldon Smith is not a poor run defender. What makes you say that? Yeah, when he came into the league it was not a strength but in 2012 and this season he's been far from poor.

And while he didn't get sacks, he had hits and hurries.

Smith was in the convo but Watt was the guy in front for most of the year.

That's your opinion but Luke has made first down and touchdown saving tackles since arriving to Charlotte and those have contributed to opposing offenses kicking field goals instead scoring touchdowns.

What? Dude, Aldon Smith was absolutely mediocre against the run last year, especially after Justin Smith's arm/shoulder gave out. That side of the defense went from giving up 2.9 YPC to 4.4 YPC. Aldon is much better this year but he was below average in 2012. He was washed out of plays and missed too many tackles.

Not true. Smith was at one point the heavy favorite to win because many assumed Aldon was going to shatter the sack record with 5 games to go.

Lol. Its basic defense that sacks >> tackles. Cmon now.

And the tackle point has clearly gone over your head.(which is not that tackles are not important)

So Aldon Smith was the reason the run defense was bad(sample size too)?

Do u know he only missed 3 tackles in 2012? Welp, I guess that's too many.

He was also like top 3 in tackle efficiency and top 10 in run stops....

Heavy favorite when Watt was doing insane things from the 3-4 DE spot??? Thier sack # were close for most of the year.......

Kuechly would win over Robert Quinn.

18 sacks is good and all, but he's on a sh¡t team and plus, has 0 FF and 0 INT. #59 just broke the NFL tackles game record and has been vital in key situations and to the success of an 11-4 Panthers team who has the best ranked Defense in the NFL..it's a no-brainer...

Kuechly will put up another 10+ tackle performance Sunday and will win DPOY at years end..

Quinn with 0 FF?  Where the hell are you getting your info from?  And incorporating INTs into a DE's performance is like grading a CB based on how many sacks he has...sorry Captain Munnerlyn.

your fooling yourself if you don't think the DPOY will be a toss up, Luke although a beast that only Zeus sperm could create, gets abuse in coverage sometimes and had/has trouble shedding blocks. Watt is still good but team blows, no one will focus on that and will focus on coaching, draft, ect. Sherman and Quinn could easily get it, Sherman especially after posting back to back games with 2int's...............i think it will boil down to this week 17 game for all the candidates

don't sleep on Robert Mathis either
