Hardy contract and Johnson

I have always been a strong believer that you cant keep both after this year.  It would lock up to much cap space over the next couple of years.  But I did some research and I can see a way we can keep both atleast for next year.  IMO Hardy will be the better of the two going forward and if I had a choice would like to keep him long term.  Well there is a way.

Johnsons contract is through to the 2016 season.  For 2014 Johnsons  cap figure will  be  16.4 million which is a lot and his dead money if he was cut is 16.2 so he wont be going anywhere next season.  But in 2015 is 17.4 his dead money 6 million. We could cut him or trade him and save 11.4 million in cap space.  So all we have to do for Hardy is figure a way to squeeze him n next season where we don't take a major cap hit.

For Luke Beason is counting $8 million in cap money for 2014 so in 2015 we can just slide that to Luke so no issue there.  We could keep this defense next season if Hardy would work with us his first season.

The only question now is how we fit Cams contract in there too.

I was curious to know what dead money CJ would carry if being cut so thanks.

Also, like mentioned above CJ usually has the tougher match up. I've admitted to being on the sign Hardy bandwagon now after his recent performances. However, while CJ was out Hardy seemed to disappear. Hardy benefits greatly from the rest of the DL and CJ.

Hardy hasn't reached his ceiling yet and that's what is so intriguing about him. Gman has some tough decisions to make this offseason. One thing we can't afford, is to have Hardy walk away and get nothing in return.

Hardy plays RDE 80% of the time so he is taking on the better tackle the majority of the snaps.

I would say franchise Hardy this year and extend Cam. Then next year restructure CJ and then work on Hardy and Luke. The good part is that it would be another "contract year" for Hardy, not that I think it would make much difference with Kraken.

The cap should jump a lot with the new TV contracts at that point.

Also, we have quite a bit of dead money that we will be rid of in the next year, so that helps.

It will all be done with Cam and Luke in mind. But knowing how DG values the DL I would expect Hardy to be retained. Somewhere along the line this offseason Godfrey will be cut. I also expect multiple players to make their giant contract more cap friendly. Stewart, Dwill, and TD will need to step up. I could see them doing something similar to what Gross did. It'd be nice if Johnson would take a cut as well in his base and instead take some bonus money.

Charles Godfrey, Steve Smith (sorry but he isn't producing enough for the 7 mil I believe he's set to make next year, might retire too), Gross (might retire) and our running backs.  All that rolled up should be enough even if Cam's demands are absurd.

    • We offered him $25k signing bonus and $225 guaranteed (including bonus) to sign as a UDFA. By making the team and doing well because he joined a team where he could, get this, start some and get almost 500 yards, guess how much he made in just 2024 and 2025? Over $1.7M. So, you really think he went for the most UDFA money or a place where the WR corps would allow him to make an NFL team and earn 8 times the UDFA money in his first two years and potentially cement himself for an even bigger payday of 2026 and beyond. Hmm, I wonder. I think seeing as he was the only UDFA RB, TE or WR to have over 158 yards (didn’t pay to see more stats muse, could have been even lower), he made the right choice on where to go to maximize earnings. Sorry again, but if you really think UDFAs and their agents prefer the small bonus/UDFA guarantee and don’t think about the easiest place to make the team, you’re wrong again. The $$$ you get just by making the team is way more and could get you multiple years. Choose a team you can’t make and your career can be over in one offseason.
    • And that is actually the concern. Great qbs put together FULL seasons of good ball. There is no benching to clear your head or taking a break. Are we gonna get a full season of good play this year?  It's really not hard to understand.
