The Return Man Debate!

Carter didn't get a chance last year tearing up his knee during preseason. I saw him all of training camp last year and what impressed me about Carter was his work ethic. Dude would be catching passes from the JUGS machine for 45 minutes after practice. He worked as hard as anyone I saw at camp. All he wants is a spot in the rotation and he is willing to do whatever it takes.

If he attacked his rehab like he did his training camp last year, then I hope he is fully recovered and able to give his best shot. It is one thing not to have the ability but it is a shame for a player who wants it so bad,, to lose his opportunity due to an injury. At least let him give his best shot and may the best man win.

He caught everything in camp and was looking very good. And what out team can surely use are players who gladly give 120% instead of take things for granted.

I am rooting big time for him. He symbolizes the Panthers who also struggle for recognition and give their all waiting for good things to happen.

agreed and well said.

i saw the exact same thing last year. i actually stayed back and watched him for a while after practice last year just to get an idea of this and the dude is committed to making himself the best he possibly can be and i think that his best is most certainly good enough to help the panthers win given the chance.

i don't exactly know how he will fit in, only that he needs to because he really has something special to contribute.

When you think about it, Mark Jones wasn't fast at all but from what I remember, someone (I think it was an opponent punter) had said all he did was run straight instead of dancing around and that's why he got yardage on the return.

(In fact, Hangman understood that concept perfectly)

I think the PR job is Robinson's to lose, and the KO return job is Goodson's.

I realize there are guys that have some ability as returners on the team, but with the few roster spots that will be available for the Panthers this year, I don't think they can afford to have specialists as returners. Rather, anyone that wins a returner job will also need to be counted on in the base offense/defense. So with Robinson the clear #4 WR (showed positive signs at the end of his rookie year, was having an excellent off-season up to the point he got injured, and most importantly, the staff loves him) and all signs pointing to the team really wanting to find ways to get Goodson on the field, I believe they will have the inside track for the jobs.

I remember all the hype surrounding Carter last year, and I don't think he is necessarily out of the running, but from his actual game time performance, he was not particularly impressive (he wasn’t bad, just nothing special). Unfortunately, some guys are great practice players, but are never able to translate that to games. I hope that is not the case with Carter since, by all accounts, he is a great guy with an excellent work ethic. But until he is able to show it during game action, I don't look for him to unseat anyone for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Where I agree with the part that with the limited roster spots that whoever it is needs to be multi-dimensional. NO WAY is Robinson the Clear cut #4 receiver.

IMO Carter was on track to be on the 08 team. Moore was a big pick up and they expect big things from him. Beavers is catching some eyes so I seriously doubt Robinson has any advantage over any of the above named players.

Go Panthers

Except that despite the hype, Robinson was still above Carter on the depth chart, and getting quite a bit of praise from the coaching staff on how well he was doing. Also, he showed some signs of being more than just a ST guy at the end of his rookie year. And the only reason Carter was on his way to making the team was because Robinson got injured, which opened up a spot. So I think with all things considered, Robinson does have a firm hold on the #4 WR position.

Now that doesn't mean that Carter, Moore, or one of the other guys fighting for a spot cannot or will not over take him. By no means is Robinson established, so if someone really steps up, it is possible for them to wrestle the spot from him. But in order to do that, they will have to clearly win the battle, just doing about as well as Robinson probably won't be enough.

As for Beavers, he is one of the guys I will be keeping a close watch on during preseason. I really like what I have read about him, and from the videos I have seen, he seems to have some real potential. However, I want to see how he does making such a huge leap in competition and in pads before expecting too much.
