my daycare is now on a 2 hour delay because of the cold.

I don't recall ever going to school that early...

Elementary schools here start at like 8:00.. middle school at 8:20 and HS about that... my son, who is a senior, only has 2 on campus classes so he goes in a 10 and gets out at 2 right now.

When I was in school (way back) the bell rang at 8:20 irrc.

Yeah, 6:40 was ridiculous. I guess enough people complained and now it's been moved back to the late time of... 7:15. My elementary school hours were similar; got out at 2:15, was off the bus 10 minutes later.

But my son doesn't go there any more. His current school starts somewhat late... after 8. But next year he will change schools and go back to that stupid early schedule.

I think the big thing for daycare workers is they have kids too. Logistically it's tough for them to drop off their kids at school while watching yours. Plus usually there is actual driving conditions to consider. It's not normal for us to have a delay based on termperature alone.

Kids in the south just don't have the cold weather gear like kids in the north. They might have a coat and a hat but many kids can't afford those sort of things.

Think about all the buses that they have to get up and running and heated before picking up over 100,000 kids - to be more exact 135,000+ students.  That's a lot of buses.  On a side note - my daughter's school now starts at 9:00 so we have a start time of 11:00 - saweet.  Her school before this one started at 7:45 and next year she'll be in one that starts at 7:15.  Buses average about 30 minutes to an hour before the start time.  For those earlier schools, the 2 hour delay is nice - no waiting for the bus in the dark.  For my daughter though - we're sleeping late and having breakfast at a restaurant tomorrow morning.  :-)  Her school is on such a late start time because they stagger times so 1 bus can run 2 routes.

It's not a problem that I have (my kids are old enough to get to school on their own) but a lot of people are having to take time off work to get their kids to school late. Seems to me that it would be better for school employees to go in early than ask thousands of parents to miss work... And again, it's cold but it's not THAT cold, especially not here along the coast. I don't get it but my opinion doesn't count.

as one who lives in a winter wonderland...I can't help but laugh at the reactions of places when they get a little taste of it.

Haha same. Where in Canada do you live? It's been awful here in Winnipeg this year. They said on the radio that it was colder here on New Year's Eve than it was at the North Pole.

Suppose to be nice here this weekend though, highs of -6C on Friday and Saturday. That's shorts weather for a Canadian!

We are not the only ones closing or delaying schools

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) — Gov. Mark Dayton has ordered all Minnesota public schools to close statewide Monday as dangerous cold looms. Forecasters are expecting frigid temperatures to arrive Sunday night and stay through Tuesday morning. Wind chill readings could plummet to 60 degrees below zero Monday morning

Minnesota is one of those winter wonderlands.  :)

Yeah the weather up there is actually very dangerous... here it's just annoying.

I left my dads place on Sunday at halftime of GB/SF trying to get home before the third Q. Got to my area and all the power was out due to the cold weather and everyone cranking there heat (hydro said). Couldn't get into my garage due to the power being out and was stuck in my shorts in my truck for the whole third Q.

I believe there are people in Toronto that were without power for a week, just last week due to the cold.
