The Beauty of the Offseason

Ok, we all know the off season is a brutal time for us hardcore fans. But every once in awhile a blurb comes out, some guy posts "Super Bowl" and 7 months later that guy is starring for us.

February 7th 2013: Carolina Panthers sign Colin Cole

Ivan the Awesome:

Meh.

JawnyBlaze:

At least it shows us they're looking at the problem. Hopefully they don't think their work is done with that issue though.

OnlyPantherFanInMaine:

THE Colin Cole?

Zod:

Gotta fill the Wofford dorm rooms

I'm not blaming anyone for their comments but they are amusing. This guy was a quality signing. Started 13 games, 9 tackles, 1 sack, kept our rotation fresh, stuffed the run, and most importantly he was not FUA. When Dwan Missed several games he stepped in and let our linebackers flow.

March 20th, 2013: Carolina Panthers Sign Mike Mitchell

Lilsmitty09:

awesome. Now just Ginn and Ill be content with this years FA considering our salary

SauceBoss:

well i mean it's a signing, but is it an improvement? doubtful.

carpanfan96:

He can hit really hard............

I think that's about it.....

Dash Global"

I think this guy would be a beast of a SS with the right coaching and scheme.

Here is a guy that won the confidence of the coaching staff through competition. He recorded 67 tackles, 4 sacks, 4 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, 9 pass breakups. The huddle was mostly positive on him but most of us had no idea. I googled him to get the stats and came across this recent article in a Santa Clara newspaper: http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20140110/sports/140119932#page=1

Needless to say raiders fans are shaking their heads as they read that.

So let's see what 2014 brings us. Hopefully a Right Tackle and some guys looking to prove themselves.

Not to sidetrack KP, but I know I'm not the only one who couldn't access this site for like 4 hours. My original thread(now locked) turned out that way cause I wanted to see if writing anything would make a thread and it did, but my original thread kept getting an error

i was gonna post a thread about this but this seems ok here are some after draft day comments:

It's funny of you to assume Cam is going to want to continue to stay and play for a team that has done nothing to build around him. Cam is about building a brand and you can't do that if your losing.

Lol are they still "trusting" gettleman. I swear if I closed my eyes I'd swear Rivera was making the picks

Their building this team to play defense and punt. I guess they think its still the 90s

--AceBoogie

Oh really?  So justify drafting a 4th string linebacker, a 5th string running back, a 3rd string DT, and ANOTHER developmental OG that was supposed to be a UDFA.  Please, I'm waiting.

Too bad we lost out on Harbaugh, their 4th round may be better then our entire draft.
He's poo'ed the bed since then, this is almost as bad as drafting Clausen/Pike/Edwards in the same draft, almost.

-SmashNDash

Yea gettle made two picks any fan would have sense to make. Not impressed. So much for his late round eye for talent

--IamSoClutch

Beginning to see why he has never been a GM

-Panther4Ever

there are too many homers here. Gettleman did very bad outside Star. not a very encouraging offseason to say the least. Meanwhile the well run franchises continue to dominate the draft.

--VIP

Brag about your BPA philosophy.

Get to later rounds.

Panic that you haven't addressed your needs.

Reach for a player with great value on the board.

Pick itself isn't atrocious but it could be kind of a scary indicator of whats to come. Marty used to pull that absolute same crap. Boast about your secretive highly educated draft wise plan of going by your board. Then getting to the later rounds, panicking, and hoping late round draft picks can come in and start for you.

We'll see if it's an aberration or a trend.

--Growl

Gettleman is a fuging idiot... stop defending him.

--micnificent28

Time to start the petition to fire gettleman, and to think he showed such promise just a day ago.

Yeah I'm not really trying to call people out. Anyone that posts on here regularly is wrong from time to time. I just think it's funny to look back and think who will surprise us in 2014?

maybe these people will learn not to have a complete mental breakdowns on draft day. we obviously have no clear cut idea of what the season will hold. a lot of us trusted gettleman because of that resume and his plans to build the lines up first.

some thought shoring up defensively would benefit the team OVERALL in the short term while also benefiting the long term when we double dipped on DTs in the draft. others had a complete meltdown we didnt draft a receiver after KK (although it is definitely time now, i said repeatedly in the offseason that we were 2-3 years away from playoff contention year in and year out because of lack of talent on this team, specifically on the lines).

offseason has its perks like draft day and the couple weeks leading up to it is one of my favorite times on the huddle. we are done with Hurney. it's going to be an awesome offseason with a bunch of unknowns (hardy, wr's, contract extensions of mitchell and ginn)

this will be my 8th offseason here and it's hilarious but not altogether unexpected to watch how opinions shift around

-the "fox is a good coach" renaissance is really a sight to behold after what the common consensus on this board was in 2009/2010

-there were people on this site who really, really hated thomas davis and thought he was a bust even before the injuries

-now that we've signed david carr we finally have a "real QB" on the roster and bobby boucher's days are numbered

Gettleman did a great job finding some serviceable veteran free agents for us on the cheap.  I expect him to do the same again this year, but he's gotta get serious about finding some true solutions at OL and WR for us to make a Super Bowl run.  Byron Bell cannot be starting at RT next year and we have to field a better #2 WR than Brandon LaFell.

To be real this probably correlates to their personality IRL as well. Overreactive cry babies who are never happy with anything.

    • 99% of my complaints generally are front office complaints.  It may not appear that way always but that's where I have been for some time.   It's also why I constantly talk about random parts the last several years....  to this day, if they were going to draft Bryce Young....I thought they needed to do specific things.   They have literally done the opposite.   In a certain world, I would LOVE an AT.  A Bryce Young.  An XL.  All sorts of people.  How they have chosen to put it all together here? Meh.  I still think if Bryce Young is your QB....the easiest and obvious play for a team....would be a dynamic slot WR, a rec RB, and solid rec TE.  Spread it out.  Let him be the point guard.  I still think this team is being built for a different type QB....one that a Jake Delhomme style QB would thrive more in.  Which is in fact the heart of what Canales has been around and done.  So I nitpick it all.  If I had thought Bryce Young was going to rebound....I would have NEVER been all in on XL like I was.  I was all in XL because I thought the BY experiment was about to over quick.  Ladd would have made way more sense if you believed in BY IMO.   I don't think this team did.  I think Dave drafted XL because they were mentally ready to move on and did after 2 weeks.  and I thought the Frank think was bologna from the jump.  I just have hate the pairings and plan every since Rhule year 1.   Rhule year 1 was the last time I really thought this team was in a good place to give it a go.  It went horribly.  But....the zoomed out plan was pretty logical all around.  Rhule just was not ready and a clown on top of that.   I still think the Dave, BY, XL, Tmac build 3 round pegs and a square one at the end of the day.  Worst thing to happen to BY was to land in Carolina IMO.   Which is often how the NFL plays out.  Where you land and what the org does matters probably more than raw talent/ability often.  I do not actually have a problem with Adam Thielen in a vacuum.  He is overperforming in a vacuum all things considered.
    • Bryce Young could throw for 40 tds and 4500 yards this season and my gut instinct still says you would triple down on hating him.
    • They should just be predetermined slotted contracts.  I feel like that was the intention of the current system, but they left too much room for interpretation about guaranteed money.  I agree though.  You play for who drafts you or you don't play.
