Mock Offseason 1.0

Catalyst

Recommended Posts

For this mock I won't speculate on Greg Hardy's future as far as a franchise tag, trade, or extension. I'm going to assume he signs elsewhere as a sort of 'worst case scenario' if you will.

RE-SIGN:

Captain Munnerlyn - 3 year deal

Mike Mitchell - 3 year deal
Graham Gano - 3 year deal
Ted Ginn - 2 year deal
Jordan Gross - 1 year deal

Derek Anderson - 1 year deal
Colin Cole - 1 year deal
Jordan Senn - 1 year deal

James Dockery - 1 year deal

TENDER:

Byron Bell -  minimum tender

RELEASE:

Charles Godfrey (June 1st)

FREE AGENCY:

OG Jon Asamoah, Chiefs - 2 year deal

WR Jeremy Maclin, Eagles - 1 year deal

WR Andre Roberts, Cardinals - 1 year deal

S Stevie Brown, Giants - 1 year deal

DE Everson Griffen, Vikings - 1 year deal

 - Maclin has said he'd be willing to accept a 1 year 'prove it' deal and still has a good bit of upside.

 - Asamoah is another guy with some experience, but also still has some upside and could use a change of scenery.

 - Andre Roberts is a depth signing who should come relatively cheap.

 - Stevie Brown is another former Giant who was hurt this past season, but has been a decent starter in the past. He'd be good depth at safety.

 - Griffen is obviously to improve our pass rush in the event Hardy bolts. Certainly no replacement, but he'd be a good fit in the rotation.

2014 DRAFT:

1st: Zack Martin, OT/OG, Notre Dame: Had a great Senior Bowl and may have put himself in position to go ahead of our pick, but if he were to fall to 28 he'd be a good get. Versatile, he could potentially give us an upgrade at either tackle spot or at guard.

2nd: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt: I'd take Matthews in the 1st round, but I have a feeling he's going to run a slow 40 time at the combine and slip as a result. Getting him in the 2nd would be great value.

3rd: Rashaad Reynolds, CB, Oregon State: I doubt if Gettleman goes corner before the 3rd round, but we will need to address it sometime. I don't know that Reynolds will ever be a top-flight starter, but he should be a quality nickel corner.

4th: Ben Gardner, DE, Stanford: If we lost Hardy we'll need to draft someone in the mid-rounds with a lot of upside. Ben Gardner would be going a lot higher if it weren't for his injury. He may be gone before this pick, but good players fall every year, especially those coming off injuries.

5th: Brandon Linder, OG, Miami: The overhaul of the OL continues here. Depending on where Martin plays, Linder could be depth or a potential starter, particularly if Amini struggles upon his return.

6th: Crockett Gillmore, TE, Colorado State: We need a reliable 2nd TE as well as someone who can take over some of the blocking duties of Ben Hartsock. Gillmore isn't the fastest guy, but he's big and can catch and also is a good blocker. Just the sort of all-around TE we need opposite Olsen.

7th (f/NYG): Andrew Miller, C, Virginia Tech: If we don't re-sign Jeff Byers we'll need someone who can backup Kalil.

2014 PANTHERS ROSTER/DEPTH CHART:

QB: Cam Newton, Derek Anderson

FB: Mike Tolbert

Very good mock.

Problem is I think Zack Martin goes higher than 28. He could very well be the 3rd OT off the board. I think that we could very well end up with Taylor Lewan at 28.

Also, Im not sure about the Andre Roberts addition. Love it, but if we are bringing back Ginn, signing Maclin, and drating Matthews then I just cant see it.

    • Yep. It was an obvious red flag that a lot of people ignored. The results/scores in preseason don’t matter, but individual performance very much does and individually, we looked like the least talented team in the league and it carried over.
    • Sorry, but in 2015, we didn’t look like poo to the extent of 2023. People who said it’s just preseason were completely wrong. Simple as that. 2015 was a veteran lead team. It was Cam’s 5th year and Luke’s 4th. Even our OL was 80% the same (added Oher) as the great run to finish 2014 with a playoff win. That year can be labeled as preseason doesn’t matter because I’m sure we rested vets and well, Ron/Mike weren’t putting in special plays, etc. I absolutely don’t recall a bunch of us saying that Turner was getting killed on one on ones or that Luke was completely out of position or that Norman was hurt again but probably fine. The only thing that was right about the 2023 preseason is that the minority of us who saw it, were correct that we A) should have been making Young and others play 100% of the reps as there was nothing to hide and B) the preseason means nothing was a bunch of BS trying to stay optimistic when it was obvious that we had way less good talent than the rest of the NFL.
    • You are telling me Paul Maurice is a better coach than Rod??? Yes!!!  It’s because he plays a better system and has a better goalie.   Our system sucks in playoffs and he refuses to roll with Koochie. Dallas cowboys level poo
