I know it's well known about Stewarts deal being a killer towards our cap, but reading this and seeing every detail is just astonishing how fuggin dumb Hurney must of been, I mean every possible stipulation he could of put in to fug us he did lol, sooner we get these big contracts and dead money off our books the better our franchise will be, Gettleman says he walked into a good job, he walked into a mess, getting Stewart to restructure this offseason is a must, 15 games in two years doesn't deserve this contract.

When do the Panthers restructure or part ways with Jonathan Stewart?

It didn’t make sense for the Carolina Panthers to sign Jonathan Stewart to a five-year, $36.5 million contract extension (including $23 million guaranteed and worth a maximum of $41.5 million through salary escalators) in 2012 after paying DeAngelo Williams like a workhorse running back a year earlier. The structure of Stewart’s contract will prevent the Panthers from releasing him in 2014.

Stewart's contract appears to have been a big mistake.

Stewart has a $6.785 million option bonus due on the 10th day of the 2014 league year (March 20) to extend his contract an additional year so it runs through the 2017 season. There is an equivalent non-exercise fee due the following day if the Panthers don’t exercise their option for the extra year. Paying the option bonus or non-exercise fee will reduce Stewart’s fully guaranteed $8.285 million 2014 base salary (without an offset) to a fully guaranteed $1.5 million (without an offset). His 2014 cap number is $5,496,250 with exercise of the option. If Stewart is released before the option bonus is payable, the Panthers will have a 2014 cap charge (or dead money) of $18.185 million for him. The $18.185 million includes Stewart’s $8.285 million 2014 guaranteed base salary and $2.5 million 2015 base salary guarantee, which would accelerate onto Carolina’s 2014 cap upon release. Giving Stewart a post-June 1 designation would keep the $5.1 million of signing bonus proration associated with the remaining years of his deal from accelerating into 2014. The Panthers would have $13.085 million of dead money because of Stewart’s departure.

There would be a $7,996,250 2014 cap charge for Stewart if he is released after June 1 with exercise of the option primarily because of his base salary reduction. The Panthers would also have $10,188,750 of dead money for him in 2015. The dead money is usually the same if a player receives a post-June 1 designation or is released after June 1. The different amounts with Stewart are due to the option bonus and non-exercise fee.

Stewart has an $8,496,250 2015 cap number if the option is exercised. The Panthers will gain $2 million of cap room by releasing Stewart in 2015 with post-June 1 treatment (assumes the option was exercised). There would be $6,496,250 of 2015 dead money and $6,192,500 of dead money in 2016.

Didn't mean to depress anyone guys, I never knew the whole ins and outs of his deal so looked it up, Hurney must of been drunk drawing this up! No wonder were fugged for cap space and this is just Stewarts contract! guaranteed money, dead money, bonuses, options, every detail in the deal is not good for us.

If Stewart is the type of guy fans have always talked about, then he needs to heavily consider doing the right thing by the franchise that drafted him in the first round, and gave him that contract, and take a pay cut to help the team.

He's got barely 700 total yards, and only one touchdown the last two seasons. There's no way he can sit there with a straight face, and say he is earning all of that contract.

If it wasnt him it would be someone else. There is always going to be some guys taking too much money while they are hurt or not performing. Every team has some, some teams are better than others. i wont argue that Hurney never made mistake contracts, however dont be surprised when we have new bad contracts from this FO in a few years. We all wanted to keep Double trouble together and we wouldnt want to have lost CJ. Hindshight is 20/20. we will field a team next year we did this year. were just going to have to be patient on some of these.

I wish he would too, but I'll completely understand it if he didn't.  Business is business.  He didn't hold a gun to Hurney's head to get that contract.

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
