Rivera favors expanded playoffs

panthers shouldn't have a bye week. we don't do well coming out of them.

Unfortunately, they needed to bye to even have a chance at a run. The regular season bye was in week three and they were walking wounded by the end of the season.

If they would have went in as a wildcard, they would have had to travel to GB or Philly, right?

I think it's just as likely though that the 10 win team could come from a weak division to still edge out a better team that went 8-8 or 9-7 in a tougher division...  you would have to somehow measure divisional strength of schedule to effectively allow only the better teams into the playoffs.

you should win with the schedule you have. that's the only real criteria i would have. if you can't win, you shouldn't be in. just my opinion.

under this new expanded change, we would have had a home game. we wouldn't have been a wildcard since we won our division.

i think that the bye was good in theory, but it did us no good. we have, historically, been a team that needs it's groove. it feeds on momentum. when that momentum is interupted, the results aren't often very good.

i think we would have done better had we not had a bye week. as battle weary as these guys were, we needed momentum more than rest.

Had the Panthers been out of the Playoffs with the record the Cards had, the huddle would be all more expanded playoffs. Personally I want more teams in it.

I have been wanting 2 more in for a few years (nothing to do with Panthers  ) To me we haven't had true wildcard games for years. Why can't the bye week for the #2 seed stay and you make 2 true wildcard games again?

I like the playoffs as they are but it wouldn't bother me if 2 more teams were added. Either way, Division Champs, regardless of record, should host in the first round.

Disagree with this completely. If you squeaked by with an 9-7 record in a crappy division, there is no way you should get to host a team that is better than you.  I've been of the opinion for a while now that the wildcard round games should be hosted by the team with the better record.

i also don't have a problem with more winning teams being allowed in, but i would like it more if the only teams let into the playoffs had winning records. teams winning their division with an 8-8 record while 10 win teams sit at home is ridiculous.

the playoffs should be for the best teams in the league...not those who lucked out and found themselves in a crappy division but still couldn't manage a winning record, but just happened to be the turd that floated to the top.

I made a thread saying as much before the playoffs and got lambasted for it. Interesting.

This. It's becoming too regular an occurrence the last few years for 10 win teams to not even make the playoffs. The Cardinals play the 49ers, and Seahawks twice a year, and still managed 10 wins. Yet teams like the Broncos, and Colts can beat up fodder teams on their way to the playoffs. The Colts clinched their division this past year with 8 wins, must be nice.

well it's true.

i tried telling myself that i was just being a bit paranoid (same with others in there who may have poo'd on your thread) in an effort to try and be optimistic about our chances, but the evidence is quite clear and it has been for years and i mean well before the rivera era.

I was nervous about having the bye week as well, but honestly we came out playing good football. Yes obviously we could have been better given that we lost, and fell apart in the second half. But if we had a few calls go our way, or actually get called, and we converted those two red zone trips alone into touchdowns, it'd be a whole different discussion right now.

But if we never learn how to win coming off of a bye how will we ever win a Super Bowl?  I understand we don't do well after bye's, but we really need to figure it out.  I, for one, will not be content simply making it to the SB, I want the win.

You are correct, however, that makes division championships meaningless and could cost the NFL money when fans stop caring at the end of the season. Look at college basketball. Conference tourneys mean nothing anymore unless that's you're only way to get in. I think the NFL does need to do something, but they have to be careful. Expansion might be the lesser of the evils.
