Would you trade Charles Johnson to keep Greg Hardy?

Hardy is not what he is without CJ, Star, and Short. He is awesome. He is talented. But he benefits from the others without question. That should factor into his FA value, but some idiot GM out there will throw out a big number and end up acquiring him. The move will be made in order to look good to the owner who looks at the fan base response (jersey sales) but in the end a budding player in Hardy will die on the vine while banking millions. He will get labeled a bad acquisition, a one hit wonder, and eventually get bounced out of the league after suffering a series of petty but "nagging" injuries. The GM will be replaced in spite of his big money Greg Hardy splash and the fans of wherever will await the next big FA signing that will without a doubt save their team. It happens over and over and over. Free Agency killed the sport long ago.

which it absolutely would not be.

Perhaps not THIS season, but what about future seasons? Johnson's cap hit jumps to $17.42 million next season (13th in the entire NFL among all positions). If we could get Hardy under contract, who's to say we couldn't cut that number significantly with some creative accounting for the 2015 season? Johnson's base cap hit this season was reduced to under $9 million with a restructure. Nothing self-sacrificing either, and something that Hardy would likely do too.

I'm not advocating swapping one above average contract for another for zero yield, but it stands to reason that over the long term we could work with Hardy to free up cap much more effectively than we could with Johnson, who basically freed up $5 million in cap for last season. Now that the money is coming back harder in the second season after the restructure, it's not a good look but one that we had to make in order to make a few important signings.
