I Don't understand the franchise and trade Hardy talk

I don't think it's possible to do quite honestly. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe if he were to sign the franchise tender the 1 year contract becomes fully guaranteed and would be money we'd have to eat if he was traded.

Some of you may be under the impression that we could franchise him and then sign him to a long term deal for another team but again guaranteed money will always be a factor. He will not sign a long term contract without a large signing bonus(guaranteed money).

You have to remember any "guaranteed money " stays with the team that signs the player even if traded. Huge reason why we had to take a big hit when trading Beason and can't trade Stewart even if we wanted to.

If I am wrong someone please explain it to me and do you have any examples to cite in the past?

I dont get why so many think teams will be willing to take the tag and trade anyway.

"Please let us relieve your cap hit while we also give you our first and second rounder."

Because it's been done before, Hardy is going to be a big free agent. Might be able to get him a little bit cheaper off the market then on it financially speaking.

because all things are possible in the lollipop guild!

on a serious note, the one way I see us keeping Hardy is one comment he made (that is most likely irrelevant when it comes down to the actual contract) but he said if he has to go out and prove it to get that big contract then tell him what he has to do...  which could imply a huge signing bonus may not be that big of a deal.  He gets his number by going out and earning that contract.

but I doubt that's seriously considered...

if a tag and trade occurs, the new team would already have a new long term contract in place for Hardy.

I get that part but again he's going to want a signing bonus and we would be responsible for any signing bonus if he was traded which makes no sense on our end.

If this was such a plausible idea then somebody could cite examples of it happening in the past.

Hardy would have to agree to that contract. It's not like he would get traded into a long term deal just because the team interested in completing the trade with the Panthers had a deal they thought was sufficient.

I really, really don't think there's going to be a tag and trade. Rayzor's post on an earlier thread articulated it very well.

Because it is a chance that we franchise him and not let him walk this year.   Thus using up a huge portion of our cap but keeping a player who may be instrumental in another playoff run.   This in turn would mean that we will end up pushing the Cam Newton extension to next year.   The consensus that I have seen is that we are going to franchise him and play him.  If another team wants him they will have to pony up the pick.  However there may be teams willing to give up a high draft pick and sign him rather than letting him hit FA where they would have to bid for him.

There is not going to be a sign and trade deal.  Gettleman will let Hardy's agent know he can talk to a team. Hardy's agent will work out a deal with the other team before the trade actually happens.  He is traded and signs immediately.

You'd be wrong.

The team trading for Hardy can negotiate a new contract.

Research the Patriots Franchise Tagging and trading Matt Cassell to the Chiefs and you'll understand how it is done.

Or just search this forum for Hardy in the title.

There is a plethera of threads on this exact subject.

Hardy is a FA. If he's tagged and traded to a team that's offering him a contract he doesn't want he doesn't have to sign that contract.

    • The same folks crying about the OL right now were crying about it in 2023 too. We have tied up over 100 million dollars in two interior olinemen alone and we have Taylor Moton inked to a recent extension. We've invested multiple first and second round picks in the offense. We hired an offensive minded head coach. This is an offensive team. The offense needs to produce or people need to be replaced.
    • This is the same place that has ridiculed and blasted Caleb Williams at every opportunity he has his team sitting at 10-4 in the same NFC that the Panthers are competing in. And their division in the NFC North is as or more competitive as our division. Yet from the same people who have very high standards for Williams we get every excuse imaginable for the smallest starting QB in the league even when he and his team continue to disappoint when the pressure is on. You lot aren't any less inconsistent than anyone else.
    • The Panthers are 9th in cap spent on offense this year.  However next season is already a different story  The Panthers as it stands right now will be 18th in cap spent on offense and 8th in cap spent on defense  The Panthers are currently set to spend more on defense next year than they are on offense this season Guys like Jaycee and Moehrig cap numbers take a big jump. Wharton has a massive cap hit   Jaycee Moehrig and Wharton in 2025 The same 3 in 2026 So this same defense as it stands right now will cost more in 2026 than this offense does right now… Got anything else you want to try?
