I don't have a problem with executive compensation in general, but he's way overpaid considering how little work/skill it would take to run the NFL. He took a very profitable product and has basically just stayed the course. The NFL isn't really regulated by the government, has no real competition, no overseas operations, and probably has <1500 employees. Now compare that to running Apple, JP Morgan, or BP for example. But I think $5-7M is plenty fair for Goodell.

 

Who cares if he is overpaid? The owners decide what he should be paid based on how successful he is at making them money and managing a $9-10 BILLION entity. His actual salary is only $3.5 million, with everything else essentially coming from "performance bonuses" - meaning the owners are extremely happy with what they see. 

 

Saying $5-7 million is fair is honestly hilarious. Early 1st round rookies make more than that.

The league office makes no money. None. All teams pay taxes, but the league itself does not make money.

Not-for-profit doesn't mean can't-make-profit. Just to be clear.

 

The ways in which the NFL makes "no money" is very murky water. The issue really is more nuanced than how you're both representing it.

No I get it.

 

The NFL itself is tax exempt due to the vagaries and complexities of the US tax law. Which is the same reason I make money each month.

 

But the point is all the revenues that the "NFL" makes are taxed fair and square already.

Yep. And these idiots will jump up and down and scream about how much an NFL player makes. During the lock out--you know when the Owners locked out the players because they wanted more money for themselves--these idiots were siding with the billionaires, many of whom they could not pick out of a photo line up, over athletes who much of their careers are over by the time they reach 30.

 

Goodell makes 50 million= he deserves it.

 

Player X makes 3 million on his rookie contract and wants to make 7 million a year on his next contract= he should be happy with 3 million because he makes 50x as much as teachers.

 

And keep in mind the player is subjected to a salary cap that ALREADY depresses his value. Goodell is not. 

 

How much you think Newton, Brady, Rogers, Johnson, etc. are worth on a TRUE open market?

The owners own the teams, and decide how their business is organized. It's not a publicly traded entity, so why on earth do you care how much they pay Goodell or the players? The owners decide their value to their business, and if you don't like it then tough - no one is forcing you to play football.These young men are getting paid millions for running around and beating the snot out of each other.  

 

There are ~1700 active NFL players on a given Sunday. There is one commissioner. It's painfully obvious that he brings more importance and value than any one single player.

With that salary he can lay off these fine amounts, I believe the players do more work making the game interesting than he does, especially as of the last seasons. Yes, its typical CEO pay but doesnt make it justified compared to others who put in much more work for smaller income.
