Peshek: TE Metrics

This tight end class boasts a number of extremely productive players which makes analysis of their receiving targets very interesting. However, each player examined here was successful in a unique way which is what actually makes them worth analyzing. In this piece, I broke them down only by their receiving targets but added in a few metrics that would separate this from past wide receiver columns.

All the targets were hand charted by me from every game of these players. If you’re missing your favorite TE such as C.J. Fiedorowicz or Xavier Grimble - it’s because their receptions were so limited that a good sample size wasn’t possible. In the piece, Austin Seferian-Jenkins will be referred to in the charts as ASJ.

we need to be looking more at the traditional TEs more than the oversized WR guy...not because we don't need that, but because that's more than likely what we will be picking up as a TE as a replacement and eventual upgrade from hartsock (who i think we bring back for another year).

i do think that the TE that we draft will be a respectable pass catcher, but his main strength is blocking.

of that list, ASJ is the best choice. i like ebron and amaro and think they'd be awesome targets for cam, but we need more blocking help.

i'll be waiting for the second group of TEs just to see how cj fiedorowicz does.

as much as i would like either ebron (who will probably be gone early) and amaro (who seems is destined to be a pat) i think really that any of the next 5-6 TEs available might be a better fit and value for the panthers and would allow us to invest in other bigger needs earlier (like OT/WR/DB).

fwiw, here's my top choices (probably no surprises)...

ASJ

niklas

cj fiedorwicz

arthur lynch

crockett gillmore

joe don duncan

marcel jensen

i know a lot of people like rodgers, but i just don't see him as being the strong blocker that we lean towards.

^ ASJ, IMHO would have more immediate and long term impact as a blocker and pass catcher for us than any player in the entire draft. I just hope so much the current mocks are right that no team in the first 27 falls in love with his freakishness and takes before we have a chance. I also hope so much the current mocks are wrong that he gets past 28.

^Sadly, probably the latter. Cocaine is more than a small, immature, no big deal, "everybody does it" off the field issue.

drinking and smoking pot....not ideal, but it's something that we can deal with and they should be able to control. it's not an immediate red flag (unless they keep getting in trouble).

when you start dealing with cocaine...yeah, that's a different beast altogether.

Kind of off subject, but I read something  (I found it) that basically said that Olsen won't be a cap casualty this coming season, but probably will be one next year as we'll only be on the hook for 2.7 mil, but will clear up 5 mil if he is cut.  The writer also mentioned the fact that when G-man won it all with the Giants, that cheap TEs were on the roster (Kevin Boss and Jake Ballard).

Wouldn't be mad at ASJ in the first at all. He's a pass catcher more in the Old fashion TE role but he would allow us to release ben stock and free up a roster space at the same time with a useful everydown player. That said i didn't  know his yac was that bad. He should be a beast at his size.

It's a shame when guys get on the drugs. Len Bias' death really opened my eyes and I steered clear of them. Except Alcohol, which I imbibed in way too much.

that was actually the first name i thought of when i made that post about cocaine.

i don't know why, but that whole thing really shook me and my little brother up. i was about 15 when that happened. neither of us were maryland fans but we liked both bias and lefty. it's a shame that lefty was made the scapegoat by the school.

and as far as the alcohol is concerned, i lost two friends to drunk driving when i was young. one good friend was hit on his bycicle just a little bit after getting home from school one day and another was a senior when i was a freshman who had just got a full four year scholarship to UNC playing DT who got drunk after a dance and drove head on into someone and died instantly.

both of those two really shaped my thinking on drinking.

    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
