Crisis averted

This whole kerfuffle is EXACTLY like the "seven second pause" that the Panther reporting krew couldn't get past all of last year.

If they had simply looked at the dead money, it would have been obvious that you can't cut 89 and make any significant cap room.

Seriously, these guys need to stop parsing every word Gettleman says and trying to create controversy.

I'm sure this won't be the last time breathless ignorance will overtake well reasoned reporting by this gang.

June 1st cut saves the team 8 million over the next two seasons.

Jason over at abovethecap.com has a podcast here that explains the complexity of the Steve Smith situ (46:55).

Pretty good stuff on why they are playing hardball with 89 when they are backed into a corner.

Eventually, I think he does restructure to play till 15 and gives the team the cap relief they need and he pockets the 8m over the next two.

Seriously, we are not cutting the only WR on the roster (not literally).  Right now, evaluations are related to contracts and the cap, not roster spots.

I would add that it takes WRs a bit of time to develop, and every time Gettlemen is  asked about WR, he mentions Tavarres King.  I get the feeling that King and possibly McNutt will play in 2014.  Add a stud from the draft, possibly a free agent (Hixon?  Ginn?) and the WR corps is better.

This is what I always wanted and looked forward to with Gettlemen's arrival. [

It seemed, before Gettlemen came here, no one ever thought younger, undrafted, unheralded free agents could actually be significant contributors, especially at Wide Receiver.

Of course, I would love some significant free agent and draft picks ups by the front office as well. Let's hope the answer is on the team (McNutt, King, Ginn), and through free agency and the draft?

I agree and would add that timing and chemistry takes time.  We need a #1 WR--some on here are saying we need a #2--No. As much as I love Steve Smith, we do not need a 35-year old, 5-9 #1 WR.  McNutt is a big WR who is great around the sideline--but timing on back-shoulder throws takes some time.  King is going to be a solid player for us.  Add a stud, and we are set.

We say "developmental" when we draft in the later rounds, but people here do not believe in "developmental."  How many on here are ready to write off Kugbila?  A 4th round G from Valdasta State, and he is done because he was not ready day 1. We either play them before they are ready and ruin them (Clausen, Norman, Evan Mathis, etc etc etc)

Gettlemen and Rivera are saying repeatedly, "the answer could be on the roster."  And to extend your point, the answer could be in the bargain bin of free agency or the undrafted rookies.  Rivera may be the coach of the year, but he would never have done it without Gettlemen and the signings he made.
