A league source said the team is preparing to use its franchise tag on defensive end Greg Hardy. The fourth-year player tied a team single-season record with 15 sacks in 2013. He would be one of the league’s most sought-after free agents if Carolina lets him hit the open market. The deadline for teams to tag one of their players is Monday at 4 p.m. ET.

Even though the Panthers have at least a couple dozen decisions to make – including finding a replacement for longtime left tackle Jordan Gross, who retired Wednesday – they need to make a final call on Hardy in the next few days.

During two media appearances – after the playoff loss to the 49ers and at the NFL Combine – general manager Dave Gettleman stressed the Panthers remain “cap challenged.” He was also non-committal about Hardy, who would command too much money for a long-term deal.

The estimated cost of a franchise tag for defensive ends in 2014 is between $12-$13 million. If the Panthers do tag Hardy, they will lose a big chunk of their cap space, but the organization believes he is too important to just let walk.

Owner Jerry Richardson has charged Gettleman to build a team that will post a winning record in back-to-back seasons for the first time in franchise history, and keeping Hardy for 2014 would be a key piece to that plan.

    • Watching games this year again and Bryce missed a wide open XL many times and some of them were in the endzone. I get the kid has mental lapses and hasn't broke out yet, but this is year three on a rookie deal! Cutting bait now is too early. If he hasn't gained anymore trust from his QB, posted any highlights, little production, or outright gets beat out then we can talk movement.
    • Samesies   I truly may just cash completely out of Panther football if we give him a long term deal that isnt necessary.  I have watched NFL for 50 years now and I can without a shadow of a doubt say you cannot win consistently with BY.  Way too many limitations to deal with.   I may come back around in 3 years when the inevitable happens and all parties are either cut and/or fired.  Giving him a deal before this season so you hopefully can get him cheaper in case he "blows up" or if you truly believe that he will has to be the most moronic decision a gm can make when the evidence is laid before you with different players
    • This is the one! I was at that game and all KB had to do was lay down on the corner after the pick or make an obvious tag while he was down. He had already ran a lazy route. Then if Cam would've just walked to the sideline like most elite QBs instead of trying to make the tackle.  A lot of people bring up the TJ Watt hit, but he just reaggravated a bunch of scar tissue from that play. And every Cam hater said that the running did him in and it was a dive tackle attempt on an interception that initially began the shoulder deterioration. He still went to New England later and would've got them in the playoffs had their A team not sat out the covid year. We quit on him too early. But hey how good was Teddy? Am I right?
