Bill Voth on Steve Smith's Situation. Basically, It Isn't Over.

You obviously don't remember that there was no reason to get rid of Jake because we already had to pay him 12 million even if we released him. He could have been the backup and we still could have brought in Clausen in as a third option. Since we were already obligated to pay him all of his salary the only reason we released him was because he was thought to be a possible disruption to Moore being the leader in the locker room.

This was common knowledge not some kind of speculation and is totally related to Smith. Smith is guaranteed 3 million in salary this year even if we cut him and would still count 7 million in cap space. So there is no reason to get rid of him this year except what Voth said which is locker room influence. They are also still related because they are not considered productive enough to justify investing big money in the future. Sure they are both not the future but it made no sense to get rid of Jake except locker room issues and it makes no sense to get rid of Smitty except for what Voth said which is locker room issues.

Again where were you when this was going around that you have no clue.

Yes, locker room issues, not throwing 5 interceptions in one playoff game, and generally playing terrible football, it was those pesky locker room issues that got Delhomme ran out of town. How could we have been so blind all this time.

This is just getting uncomfortable.

You can't honestly believe that a group of grown men feel hindered in becoming team leaders because of Steve Smith. If that were the case, we would basically have a locker room full of women, and I certainly don't believe that to be the case.

What WR currently on the roster can get open without Steve Smith being on the field? My guess is maybe Ginn.

Olsen is our only receiving option who can hold his own. When Steve Smith was out for the Atlanta game, Olsen had nearly 50 yards, and a touchdown. Lafell had zero yards, and Ginn had 6. Deangelo Williams actually ended up leading the team in receiving for the game. Yet apparently in the minds of some we are better off without Steve Smith.

It sounds like their might be some undisclosed rifts that happened this past season.  Sounds like teammates don't like him to me.

I wrote something about SS being a total dick but deleted it.  Whatever.  He can be your personal Mother Clarissa or whatnot.

I loved him (notice the past tense) but he doesn't deserve #1 WR in 2014.

If he does cooperate...his legend continues.

If he shows his ass...FUCHK YOU SS!  You never cared about us, all you wanted was da money.  Your legend just went in the Lance Armstrong pile.

I didn't say that about Smith, Voth did.  And he has been on point on everything so far.  He stated he talked to several people in the organization and this is what they said about their concerns about Smith.  What is uncomfortable is how argumentative you are when you ignore what he is saying acting as if you have a clue.  Just like you apparently didn't believe it about Jake when it was discussed now you don't believe that Voth is right either.  Why would anyone believe you when you have no credibility and just argue with anyone.  But I am done wasting my time. I prefer to listen to those who talk with team officials in the know instead of random posters like you who don't let the facts get into the way of their arguments.

what is a random poster? so the internet just took guy off the net to post in this forum? So this is some giant conspiracy with leaks from unknown team sources?

My gut tells me that we will work out a deal where Smitty will announce that this will be his final year and he will retire as a Panther. The locker room will solidify behind him with a single goal of getting him a ring. The observer will have another full page ad that this is the year. Of course the cold hard facts may turn out to be different . However, if the "Turk" does come, i wouldn't expect a call from Gman/Rivera but instead a knock on the door from The Man. Their relationship goes beyond player/owner and I would expect many tears to be shed.

I think Jordan Gross said it best about Smith,

"He can make you mad as heck, but you still love him."

Some of the guys in the locker room haven't been around Smith for 13 years and don't understand him as well as Gross does. To those guys and to a lot of the younger players, Smith probably only pisses them off.

I'll keep pointing this out, when Smith went on the radio and talked about what was said. He flat out said his agent called him and asked him about it because he couldn't get a call back from the Panther's. They wouldn't talk to either of them...... <-That tells you all you need to know.

Everyone is free to believe what they want.  A guy who has been on point breaking news about the team or someone who is naysaying the information without justification.  I didn't give Voth credibility the first time he broke the news until I found out he was right.  Then he does it again and it proves to be right again.  So when he says something about Smith, you get the notion he doesn't have one source but several insider sources which apparently are willing to talk to him.  Maybe he is wrong and that would make it the first time this year. I don't think he would say anything unless he had heard it from multiple sources.

Believe what you will though....   After all it is only a message board.

I wanted to say this, but thought, "Do I really want to go there?" Glad you had the balls. You are exactly right.

It's just like the Cam Newton comments. All Gettlemen said was now that the prices are in place, it's time to win. Unfortunately people on here who are supposed to be die hard fans are unable to read between the lines.

    • Derrick Brown was one player I never called or even suggested was a bust . Dude was young and hadn't even hit his stride. It takes time to learn the position. The thing I appreciated about him is that he kept improving season after season. He got paid and keeps on going like the Energizer Bunny.
    • How many teams coddle their QB the way Bryce has been coddled? I have never seen any other team in the NFL EVER baby a QB the way that Bryce has been.  Bryce was named day 1 starter his first year. It was obvious he didnt deserve it. He wasnt ready as evidenced by the worst rookie year in NFL history.  So let's move to year 2. He's named starter again with no competition in TC and is benched 2 games later. We have the ghost of a backup in Dalton who is so bad he can only beat Vegas and let's remember, the only reason he lost his starting job was a car accident, not because Bryce actually beat him out in practice.  And year 3. We sign Dalton again, who already proved he couldn't be depended on to put an even remotely passable performance on the field, and bring back Jack Plummer, who was even worse than last year. It was obvious he was nothing more than a pretend body in an attempt to create an illusion of some type of attempt to find a backup.  Then we start again with garbage play again and Bryce gets benched with a phantom injury, and the ghost of the ghost of Dalton breaks his thumb on the first drive and craps the field all over again. If we had actually made an attempt to find a legitimate QB2, it's possible Bryce doesn't step on the field again. Bryce is not agood QB and if we had any other mediocre QB, our record would be the same or better.  Bryce is not entrenched. He's been placed, protected and sheltered from ever having to face a  real QB competition in TC. Richardson and Levis both were ass and both were benched and eventually replaced.  Do I expect Baker to face competition in camp? Sure. I expect Tampa to find the best QB2 they can at price that fits their cap and resources and system and get him up to speed. If he's better than Baker, and if he's better by a significant margin, that's best for the team. The ultimate goal is a Super Bowl. Bellichek was constantly getting QB2s with the GOAT as his starter. He knew the value and that was realized when Cassell led them to an 11-5 record as a backup.  You and I may think differently than the people that matter but I will say it again. If you're afraid to bring in a capable backup, especially after the debacle of last year. The starting role wasn't earned, it was given, and that's loser mentality.
    • I would have done the same thing.  LSU is a much better job than Ole Miss.  Plus the enormous contract and every advantage a college team can offer in terms of recruiting and facilities and tradition etc
