You can be a good general manager without your players hating you. Players love to come play here because of the organization's reputation, and I'm concerned this could hurt our ability to bring in or keep players.

I don't care if players like a GM, as long as they respect him.

 

i think in one year of managing the team, he's done plenty to earn that respect.

 

he doesn't hide the fact that his job is to make the franchise better...not to be liked by the employees. his commitment is to the team, not the players.

 

i think he's a likeable fellow, he's just not trying to be their buddy like hurney was. business first.

I completely agree with you....I own my own business and I'm very friendly with my employees but I'm not their friend. Once you get into the "friend zone" people actually start losing respect for you.

He has also set the tone so that when it's time to negotiate, every player up will do the same thing he's doing. If they see that he's business to the extreme, the players will do the same. It's good to be all business, but hopefully he's personable to make up for it or he'll have all of our stars asking for the supermax contract.

Not good with Cam, Luke, and Star waiting in the wings.

But by that rationale, players should have been giving all kinds of warm fuzzy discounts when Hurney was here because gee whiz they just love the organization. Charles Johnson got a massive contract. Charles Godfrey got a massive contract. Jonathan Stewart and Deangelo Williams both got massive contracts. Jon Beason at one point signed the largest contract ever for a MLB. None of these guys took a voluntary paycut when we were in cap hell every year because they just love Charlotte.

As fans we tend to want to keep players around eva use we get attached to them. They are the athletes who get us all pumped up on Sundays, not the fat bellied GM who tucks his polo shirt into his short shorts. So we take it personal when they get mad (Smitty) or when they leave on less than stellar terms (Beason).

At the end of the day I'll take Gettleman's approach ten times out if ten. No more max contracts for making topless workout videos or for riding stationary bikes. Hardy was a clear example. No, we will not overpay you for one solid year. He produced again this past season, and will now be well compensated for it. I have no problem with paying top tier talent top tier money, but for too long we've given out contracts that are out of line with performance or playing time.

Do your job, you'll get paid. Do it really well, you'll get paid really well. Very simple. Riding the coat tails of a decent season you had years ago isn't gonna fly anymore, and this fan couldn't be any happier about that.

      Would Morgan or Beason have been HOFers' if injuries hadn't derailed their careers?  I was not a close watcher of the game when Morgan was in his prime but I thought Beason had a few seasons at close to Lukes' level of play.

      Franchise QBs feast when things are rolling and the tide that raises boats when things are going sideways.  Bryce isn't that. He's a complimentary player, that's it.  When the defense and STs are on point, he plays loose and it shows.  When we are in a dog fight and things haven't gone our way, he struggles.  It's that simple. He's not a horrible QB, but he's not top tier either.  So the question begs, is this worthy of a second contract?  The answer should be no.  It definitely is my answer. Bryce will never be a QB that can produce wins largely on his arm.  That's a FRANCHISE QB, any other QB is simply a placeholder at the starter's position until that guy can be found.   At some point the excuses of lack of weapons will be a straw man.  Heck, it's nearly there now.  I mean if he doesn't look even better than last year will we blame it on the TE position?  'Well if Bryce only had a player like Kelce, Kittle or Gronk on this team...'  Are we really going to do that?

      When I arrived at college, I was 18, not too much younger than some of these draft picks.  It was not a huge school, but there were guys on the team who were 21, 22, 23....playing ahead of me.  I was seventh on the depth chart.  Those guys have been through a few seasons, were stronger, more knowledgeable.  I was a better raw player than some of them, but those other factors matter.  As I grew stronger, more familiar with the playbook, and learned what it was like to play in college, I gradually improved and with that, I rose up the depth chart.  It took most of my freshman year for the light to come on.  Had the coach thrown me into the starting lineup day 1, I would have probably failed.    And that was college.  So I agree with you based on my experience on a much lower level.  Frankly, I think that is why so many kids drafted to fill huge gaps bust.  The teams are desperate.  Anyone who looks to fill vacancies in the starting lineup through the draft is desperate.  You draft depth to develop.  For this reason, I say, "Let Walker start for a while."  Maybe Brazzell can be our WR 4.  Throw Hunter into a rotation and ask him to do one or two things.  Freeling needs some strength and he needs to work on run blocking.
