Panthers attempting to trade Steve Smith.

I think that's the point behind this whole thing. Its time to move on from the old and let Cam and Luke take over. That's what the FO wants. That is the only reason that makes sense to cut/trade your only offensive weapon.

But in the end it may be the right call.

I love Steve Smith but he has a strong overpowering personality and sometimes that's a good thing and sometimes that's a bad thing and this team will never be Cam's team till he is gone.

lol wtf, the team has never, and never will belong to 1 player. Smith was always the first person in cams ear, telling him to keep his head up every time he threw the towl over it. He was a great captain and leader.

Ah, emotions and football mix so well.

Maybe not but when you have been emotionally invested in someone for so long, it's acceptable to be slightly miffed at the idea that they are being thrown out the door and a don't call us we'll call you remark.

I haven't seen this answered yet anywhere else (and maybe its been answered in this tread and if it has, sorry) but Smith's dead money is 9M for this season, but his cap hit is only 7M...this means the team would LOSE 2M against the 2014 cap by cutting him, correct?

I don't see how doing this accomplishes anything if thats the case, other than we lose our all time greatest player (who wasn't worth his 2014 salary, sure) and only experienced WR under contract and $2M apparently in order for Gettleman to make a point about how no one is safe?

Or am I seriously missing something here?

Edit: NVM someone actually answered the question replying to me in another thread from last time I was on here...I should probably have checked my notifications before posting.  Still not sure if I fully understand it though.

What did I say that was wrong?

Just ignore the fools whining about the gm looking to the future good of the team rather than paying for past achievements.  Id rather take a chance on a young shiney number 1 wr than patch up Smitty for another season and trot him out onto the field again to slip further into mediocrity.

You guys act like he frees up all this money or something. You cut/trade him and your still broke with a team full of holes. I wouldn't give a damn if it was January, broke is broke.

Again its not about the $ or Smith's play but what goes on in the locker room. Smith is hot headed and overpowering. Gross is gone and the only Vet leader (besides TD) on the team is Smith, he is the only leader on the team that plays Offense. They want this to be Cam's team and it will never be Cam's team till Smith is gone.

That's really all there is to this.

Steve Smith gets traded, Zod makes a billion dollars on web traffic and retires young. He sells me the rights to carolinahuddle.com for cheap so he can travel the world photographing scantily clad women, hilarity ensues.

Let's do this thing Mr. Igo.

I didn't know CJ, Star, and KK were scrubs.  With them, we will always get great production.  Plus, we could have gotten Allen to come in on top of that. (There's actually a couple of guys out there that could come in and play opposite CJ)  We made a dumb decision in tagging Hardy (if we weren't going to trade him).  He's not making it easy for a long term deal, which means we could enter the season paying him 13 million.

Who said anything about them being scrubs? So you aren't thinking about injuries? You don;t just let players like Hardy walk. Tag keeps him here with more time to get long term deal.

Allen is declining. Young would be a better option.

Dumb? IF we can get him to sign a team friendly deal(like Bennett), it won't be one.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
