Panthers attempting to trade Steve Smith.

I know an older vet who is getting ready to probably be cut from his team.

Last year he was 46th in the NFL on 64 receptions.

He was 57th in TD catches with 4.

He was 49th in yards with 50 yards per game.

I know for a fact we can get him for a deal of 3 years for 23 million.

How does that sound?

I don't get how some folks are acting like we suddenly have nothing at WR---losing a 35-year old speed WR shouldn't be considered "emptying the cupboards".

I wish Smitty would have agreed on a pay cut. Maybe he shops himself a bit and returns to take a $3m per deal.

Whos cam throwing to mcnutt? We going into 2014 with "Donald" re-signed as our #1? This ordeal isnt beneficial to the team as a whole AT ALL.

Would really be funny if all this is being scripted and Smitty/Gman are just putting us on for publicity! Bad press is still press!

Hell, they probably already have Smitty's new contract signed and they are just having some demented fun! The kind of fun Smitty would like!

That would be great but Smith is going to either announce retirement, be cut, or both tomorrow.

This will either make or break Gettleman's start to a legacy here in Carolina. We go 3-13 next year with no passing offense, this move will forever be questioned. We go 12-4 and make the playoffs, he's a smart man.

HAHAHAHA OH MY GOD shut the fug up. You people seriously kill me. One player does not make a team, and making one deal does not make that big of a difference. Smith is no longer a number 1 receiver. You all act like Gettleman is some kind of idiot. I think he realize we have to address our receiver corp. I'd be willing to bet we will have the best receiving corp top to bottom that we have had in many years. He has made it one of his priorities. Calm the fug down. Jesus

Possibly.  How much do you really know about McNutt?

You realize that we have free agency and the draft before the season, right?  How long would you hang on to a 35-year old WR?

Gettlemen, an expert evaluator of NFL talent, has decided Smitty is not worth the $$.  I tend to agree with him.

How do you know?

Several points of evidence, all of which have already been brought up in this thread and the others about Smith today.

You don't have to believe me and boy I would love to be wrong, but I doubt that I am.

Looking to see what they can get.  Hopefully just testing the market and not a prelude to being cut..

Saw this coming ... Smith said he is still training because as of now, he is still a Panther.  Why would he say that unless something was discussed with Gman.

    • I wonder if they'd consider trading Rasheed Walker to a team that needs tackle help but missed out in the draft?
    • LOL. This is such a Panthers fan take.  Anyone who falls to us must suck because some other team didn't take them before.  We got lucky with Lemon, Thieneman, and Freeling all falling to us (honestly any of the three is a A+) but the WR and S positions are much deeper than the LT position in this draft.  We got the LT w/ the most upside at 19.  Mauigoa played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the nfl.  Spano played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the NFL due to short arms.  Blake Miller played RT in college and is not as good as Freeling.  Proctor is a true LT but his ability to handle quick edge's worries me (see Icky).  Freeling is a true LT and a gifted pass protector.  Many think he has a very high ceiling and will benefit from not having to start right away.  This is how you build a franchise.
    • After watching Cam get killed for years behind a bad Oline and having to watch the 2021 and 2023 Olines I will never complain about this team putting resources into that spot.  We got a true LT who could really push Rasheed Walker for the day 1 job. Go back and watch Iceky's draft profile from 2022 and all the talk was Ickey would be an all-pro guard in a zone blocking scheme, but he could play LT in a gap power run scheme. That's why Ickey looked really good when Wilks took over and we just started running gap run plays and just mauled people up front but under Canales we've been more of a zone running team. Ickey can survive at LT with his pass blocking but his true strength will always be his ability to just move guys in the run game and that's a skill set that's better used at guard.  Take another OT later on day 3 to learn from Moton to take over RT in a couple of years and let Walker and Freeling battle it out for the day 1 LT job then next offseason trade one of Hunt of Lewis and let Ickey move inside to guard.
