Sad sad day :(

I can't number all the times he scored a touchdown or kept a drive alive by simply plucking what should have been a incomplete ball/interception out of the air. Or the number of times he scored or gained extra yards by pushing over bigger defenders. Fiercest competitor we've had.

Greatest Panther of all time.

Good luck Steve, thanks for everything!

Some of my favorite Steve Smith moments:

2008: He caught two ridiculous lobs from Dehlomme against the Packers at Green Bay to beat the team we were clearly outmatched by.  Also caught a ridiculous lob in the last regular game of that season against the Saints, after the Saints had scored and it looked like we were going to lose -- Smitty came through on a beautiful catch on a prayer of a pass and we won the game to get the second seed in the playoffs and the bye.

2005: Playoff game against the Chicago Bears where he just went off and was basically our entire offense.

    • Pretty sure that a QB contract payday is all the competition any QB in this league needs, I don't think a competent backup is going to make them play any harder when the current situation wouldn't warrant the contract extension yet anyways. Your opening point in this post is also the problem, "Bryce has shown signs of improving", but that's still all he's shown, and he's only showing that because of just how bad he was to start his career. If he played like last season from the beginning and never improved one bit, then I actually think more fans would be ready to move on from him, which is what's weird.  It's like going from one of the biggest draft busts of all time into the 25th best QB in the league over 3 years means he deserves a long term $40+ million a year contract extension. Improvement shouldn't be the goal when the result of said improvement is still bottom of the league levels.
    • Yeah, but we've seen him do it. Just not often. I think that's the reason for the taller WRs. Would likely be a problem finding someone like Jimmy Horn in the mess.
    • And the Rams, Seattle, Patriots, Green Bay, Jaguars and the Bills who all made the playoffs and in case you forgot, Seattle and the Patriots played in the SB. By any measure, that's pretty brutal.
