Ron Rivera: Panthers may not need number 1 WR in 2014

Just wanted to pop in and lol a little at the idea of making Olsen the passing centerpiece.

Bus Cook is going to absolutely murder us if we want to keep Newton. Entering Cam's fourth year, we still haven't given him anything to work with and are building the O like he's Kevin Kolb. The rage over his contract number here will be absolutely epic.

I agree, I like Olsen but I can't stand it when they make it seem like he is better than what he really is.

Why do we always play fox ball. Even when Fox is not playing it anymore. I have a feeling we will be begging for Chud to come back by the end of this year.

I made an account because this post was so fuging true. We're forever going to be that slow, methodical team that gets to the playoffs every five years on the back of one or two offensive play makers, while putting too much resources into linebackers, and running backs.

2008 run game with our 2014 defense? jizz

its possible.. bulk up that O-Line!

It's not at all possible. We don't have 2008 Smith drawing double, and triple teams. Even if we had a stacked offensive line we would still have to run through stacked boxes on every play, much like last year. We could draft four offensive lineman in the first four rounds of this draft and still have a line that's average at best. Offensive lineman take time to develop like any player, and a lot of it is developing with the players beside them. Right now we're looking at maybe getting two lineman in the draft, possibly. It's just not going to be enough. The dream of the 2008 Panthers died in 2008, it won't happen again.

Though let's say we perform some miracle and we go from right now being projected the worst offensive line to the best. We still lack receivers that can do anything worth while to draw enough attention to run effectively. We also still have one of the most obvious playbooks in the league. Which is a fuging shame considering we have Cam fuging Newton as our quarterback.

Everyone should take note of who is saying what. As someone already pointed out, the same folks claiming that we don't need a #1 WR, passing game isn't important, attempting to have an explosive offensive should be secondary are the exact same people in December/January complaining that Cam did not throw for 300 yards, and the offense is only putting up 10 points.

They will be the first to throw Newton under the bus and question whether he the long term solution at QB.

How do I know this? Go back to last off season. All throughout the the summer when folks were complaining about the lack of talent on offense, that Cam needed more help, they said we had the personnel to have a top 10 offense. Of course, once September hit, "Newton is a bum."

Come September, if Newton is not throwing for 300 yards and putting up 30 points, these same people now talking about having a run first, control the clock offense, will be screaming: how come can't Newton be like Rodgers? And suggesting it is time to trade Newton for picks.

Yep, this is how it will go down exactly. Most these folks preaching patience didn't and don't have patience when it comes to Newton and the offense.

I doubt we will ever have a true tier one WR unless he is developed from the draft. Teams simply over pay for the position as Miami did in FA. With the cap hovering over your head, paying 10 million dollars a year for a guy  that is impacting 20% of the plays is steep..

To me I like a balanced group of receivers ...each with a different skill set makes sense. The Panthers have done a pretty poor job of both drafting talent and developing talent.

The good news is this years draft is absolutely stacked with WR talent through 4 or 5 rounds. If we do not snag 2 Wrs this year I will be shocked. The bad news is we may not see their value until next year. Getts decided to clean house at the position and I am afraid we may get worse before we get better but at the very least we will get a good look at some young talent with the hope someone will step up.

Exactly, teams are going to stack the box and dare you to throw the ball.

I think you guys are taking this coach-talk a bit too seriously. They want to calm the fans down after the meltdown -- it's just common sense. I don't think the Panthers are done with the WR position. We can all freak out after the season's done.

This

This could also be a hint we may not be going for explosive but for a sure-handed guy that can score a la Latimer, Abbrederis, or Landry.  They're prepping people for the scenario in which we don't draft a receiver round 1 or maybe even 2.
