The Kony Ealy Gambit

Just brain-storming hypotheticals here with regard to the upcoming draft.

 

If a top-notch DE like Kony Ealy (and he's a damn beast) is available at our pick #28, considering the depth at the WR position and at the OT position in this draft (players like Davante Adams, Donte Moncrief, and Jordan Matthews might well be available to us in the 2nd/3rd rounds, as well as OTs like Antonio Richardson, Jack Mewhort, and Joel Bitonio likely available), would taking a guy like Ealy give us really, really good flexibility for our DE position?

 

Because we all know that, after this year, one or the other of Kraken or CJ are likely to be gone.

 

I want both an impact WR and OT in this draft as much as anybody (maybe more than anybody when it comes to the OT spot).  But if a true impact player like Ealy is sitting their and only the second tier 1st round grades at WR are available and only 2nd round grades at OT are available, wouldn't Ealy be a great choice considering how good of a player he is and the flexibility it provides us?

I agree with you, if Cooks, Benjamin, Lewan (and obviously all the TOP tier guys) are gone then just going BPA will benefit Carolina in the long run whether that be Ealy, a S, a CB etc. I just really hope Cooks, Benjamin or one of the T's falls to 28.

I think the Panthers would jump for joy if they could get another solid pass-rusher in this draft.  I guarantee you they are looking to part ways with either Hardy or Johnson by next offseason because they can't afford both.

Yes let's waste our first rounder on a guy that would be a back up at best. How often do hardy and cj come out? So for those x plays a game(maybe 10-20) this guy would play. We have cj long term and gman just said he was closer to reaching a deal for hardy. Would you like to draft a mlb in the first too? You know for when luke gets tired. Sorry for being a douche, but c'mon, if he was there and a team really wanted him we could just trade down and get guys that could have an imo date impact on this team.

And in regards to the whole bpa argument. That's when you take a really good player even if he plays a position that isn't a need, not when that position is totally set and you already have elite players there. If Johnny boy fell to 28 would you want to take him too? Like c'mon. I'm all for bpa, but not for qb, de, dt, mlb, or rb(just bc we have so much money there already). And just in the first couple of rounds, to clarify. I have no problem drafting a qb or mlb in the later rounds if he's the bpa

His point was that it's unlikely CJ and Hardy will be around long term because Cam, Luke, Hardy or CJ and Star will all be among the highest paid players at their positions.  Getting a replacement for (most likely) CJ will be a priority sooner rather than later

What you don't seem to understand is that if Gett reaches a deal with Hardy, that is likely the end of CJ's career in Charlotte after the 2014 season.

 

Or conversely, if Gett is NOT able to reach a deal with Hardy, then Hardy will also be allowed to walk after the 2014 season while we keep CJ.

 

After 2014 is done, we will have one or the other, not both.

Gman also wants to get a deal done with hardy and knows how important both are to this team. I'd say there's a 50 50 chance both stay on this team for more then one season

They can save about $8.5 million cutting him next season I believe.

how about we draft a guy that we could plug into the starting lineup right away?

 

if the goal is to replace either hardy or johnson after this year, why not wait cross that bridge when we come to it and take care of this year, you know...this year.

 

BPA is fine, but lets try to limit the choices to areas of immediate need.

I CAN see the future.

 

I can see the requirement to resign a franchise QB in the near future.

 

I can also see the requirement to resign a franchise MLB and DPOY shortly thereafter.

 

I can also see a team in cap hell that could never afford to pay two starting defensive ends well over $20 million a year combined.

 

And I can see that if we cut CJ prior to the 2015 season, we save over $8 million on the salary cap.
