Panthers Sign Avant to 1 Year Deal

Recommended Posts

You're missing the point. It's about maximizing your investment. Within the next two years Cam Newton will be the highest paid player on the Carolina Panthers. If you want to win with defense and running the ball while having your qb only throw when needed then go get a Trent Dilfer. I'm not against that philosophy, it can and has worked in the NFL. But the biggest mistake you can make is to have a talent like Cam Newton, pay him 100 million dollars, and stop him before opposing defenses ever get a chance.

People will try but you can't argue with this ^^^.

They need to draft 2 WR'S because you have time to have talent growing with Cam on rookie deals. So while Cam gets paid his weapons will still be on rookie deals until we can get out of this cap situation.

Cotchery def outperformed smitty last year. Avant is a huge upgrade over lafell. Underwood is on par with ginn but has more upside. Idk why ur worried about rookies, our fo has proven the last few years we'll get day 1 starters out of the draft and udfas.

Also I dont understand an earlier post saying we had the tools to win in cams first year. We had no depth along with bottom feeder special teams and defense. Sure Rons coaching style change helped us out, but the roster we currently have is significantly better than what we had in 2011.

Stop with this Avant is better than Lafell nonsense. Ok yea he's better if we discount receiving yards and touchdowns.

Cothchery had 1 year better than Smitty in his entire 10 year career & it just happened to have come last season. WHOOPDEY DOO! I don't think anyone in their right mind is now thinking he's better than him after that. & it wasn't even significantly better smh.

Jason is an upgrade for lafell based off of...?! Avant has been in the league twice as long & still doesn't have as many TDs as him.

Tiquan, I'm not gonna pretend to know anything about except that he was a 3rd/4th tier guy where he came from so he may be just as good as Ginn but were suppose to be upgrading right?

I'm never one to keep up w/ this offseason stuff but I was actually excited to do so this time around coming off the season we had last yr. I'm only saying that to say I'm never aware of the made changes but I know that for the last 3 yrs we've always come within a TD of winning in the majority of our losses. We jus had to find out how to finally win & we did.

Its not about numbers. This isn't fantasy football. Avant is 10x more reliable and consistent than lafell. Avant won't be asked to be our #2 either. Two different roles. Also millions cheaper

Well, playing, not starting. But, yes.

Star, White, started most of the season. Lester got 6 starts and Klein and Short got some starts in during the season.

All got a lot of playing time.

Example.

Cole got more starts but Short played more snaps.

No, you are missing the point. It is about winning, not maximizing investments.

How many Super Bowls have Manning won with all those great offenses? How many have Brees won with those great offenses? Brady has never won a Super Bowl in a year he has thrown more than 28 TDs.

We are doing it right. When you have a QB as talented as Cam you build your defense first. That takes pressure off of Cam. His first two seasons if he had a bad game, we lost.

When you have a great defense, when Cam is clicking you blow people out. When he is struggling you still have a chance to win.

We are trying to build a winning franchise. Not just the offense.

Good signing, I think we are done signing WR's unless a Stevie Johnson type player is cut.

I think Stevie would be a nice pickup, but last I heard he was probably gonna stick around...I like the idea of signing the vets (Cotchery and Avant) to mentor and drafting a couple of young guys for those guys to show them the ropes...

When did I say you should ignore the defensive side of the ball? You guys think I'm the biggest WR supporter on the forum, but I'm firmly against double dipping at any position including WR. It's absolutely about maximizing your investment, let's not forget this is a business. Paying a game manager 100 million dollars is bad business and will handicap this team. You think we're cap strapped now, imagine this team with Cam make 20 million a year and not 5. You guys would be calling for his head with every little mistake.

    • It's funny how the teams with the great QBs stay at or near the top of the league every season.  Yes it is a team game, but the QB has the biggest impact in most NFL football games.
    • Look, no one is ever a perfect player.  Since the QB handles the ball on 100% of plays offensively (unless there's a direct snap to a RB or something), I can absolutely see where they get an outsized blame and gain from what happens at any given snap of a football game.   Theoretically, there shouldn't even be a stat or idea to a 4th quarter comeback or game winning drive because you should already have done that during the game.  Losers!  Right?  Just because you win late doesn't take away the fact you tried to lose the game for your team! I'm not a fan of that opinion, but again, I'm just a moron with a keyboard.   Bryce has limited tools.  Bryce has not inspired the same level of confidence in us as Cam Newton did in year 3.  I certainly get that.  We traded a TON of assets to get Bryce, and we still suck.  (I mean, since we've lost games, we're losers right?) I completely understand that some fans are just unhappy with a limited QB and a team that isn't performing well, unless the other teams are worse losers than we are. I will say this:  Bryce will fight until the end.  Sure, he's has some real loser football.   But in close games, he's doing his best to comeback (even against a winner of prevent D). Now is it better or worse if your QB plays their best ball in the first half and sucks 2nd half so long as they finish with 300 yards, 3 TDs for your fantasy points? Who said stats are for winners anyway?  The Panthers and Bryce has a long way to go.  I'm enjoying the winning right now.  Though I do start each game thinking "how will we fug this up today?" Because it's been such a poo show in the Tepper era.  Will he prove to be a legit starting NFL QB?  Maybe not here as evidence by our record with QBs who were high draft picks.
    • Ive never liked the term game winning drives because they include games where the QB was part of or was the reason the team was behind in the first place. Ive been arguing against this stat since the Delhomme years. It should only count when the QB is out of the equation of reasons why the team fell behind in the first place and is at least half the reason why he led the last drive to give them a lead. It shouldnt count if they just hand it off most of the time and the RB is on fire and they go down and score a TD or FG.
