Corey "Philly" Brown a name to watch

May 15 2014 04:01 AM Jeremy Igo Carolina Panthers
With the Carolina Panthers 2014 Rookie Camp coming up tomorrow, you may want to keep an eye on one name in particular.

Of all of the undrafted free agents signed with the Panthers, wide receiver Philly Brown may have the best chance to catch on with the team. Brown led the Ohio State Buckeyes with 10 touchdowns last year. At a lean 5'11 and 178 pounds, he has decent size but could use to put on a few pounds. His route running also has much room for improvement.

But Philly has one thing you can't teach, speed. His 40 low was a 4.38 making him on of the fastest guys on the practice field and able to compete as a return specialist.

With he departure of Ted Ginn it remains to be seen who will be fielding punt returns. Kenjon Barner will be given another chance at the duties, as will Pilares. However, punt return talent is at its thinnest in many seasons. This may be the opening an UDFA like Philly Brown needs to find his name on a locker.

If Brown proves his worth as a special teamer he'll make the roster. When you start getting down on the depth chart, you're looking for players that can and want to excel in third facet of the game (special teams). Hopefully Brown can show us something as a KR/PR.

I'd throw Denicios Allen's name in there as well.

His film is amazing and he's a great wrap up tackler, he's also very quick. His size is a little bit of concern but like I mentioned before when you start getting down to the sixth and seventh guys on the depth chart, you're looking for players that can come in and make an impact on special teams. I think Allen could be what Jordan Senn was for the Panthers for so many years.

I'd also like to point out that the Panthers carried seven linebackers on the roster last year. There are currently only eight linebackers on the roster right now. It appears that Allen, D.J. Smith, and Ben Jacobs will be battling for the final two roster spots at the linebacker position. I like Allen's chances.

At his size Allen would need to be a physical freak of nature to play linebacker in the NFL, but he isn't. The guy weighs 218 pounds and may not get any larger.

I think you will see the Panthers trying him out at Safety where he could provide some interesting benefit especially on running downs and blitz packages.

They could both make an impact on ST's this year. I'd love to maintain Ginn's production as a returner from last season.

This Philly B obsession around here is puzzling to say the least

Brown is very fast - Hopefully that speed will make him a solid contributor as a kr/pr man because we dont have one now.  I only saw one highlight of him returning a punt on that clip - did I miss something?  Would like to see more highlights of his kr/pr.

I think they view him as a Jordan Senn replacement.

Hey Stirs,

Why do you say it is puzzling? Just curious of your comment. I think he could make the roster. He is fast and has nice wiggle for possible special team help. I think he could create mismatches in the slot. Most of our receivers now are big boys, so I think there is a place for him.

Agreed. Allen may have a tad more upside if he can put a little weight on and retain his speed.

I am very fat - Can I be a contributor at OT because we dont have one now?

Just saying...

The most important thing you need to know about Philly Brown is that he is not a fan of being called Philly Brown.

I see my thread is not article worthy :)

But yes, he is one to watch this offseason. The battle at the back end of our WR corps should be fun to watch this offseason. One guy is bound to emerge from it. **fingers f'n crossed

Would he prefer 'Upper Darby' Brown? Sign him and I bet he won't care what you call him.

Love him!!!!

I expect him to compete with King and McNutt for a spot on this team.

I think Tiquan Underwood ends up with a shot at returning tpp.  Ran a 4.31 and returned kicks in Jax.

After the Joe Adams debacle I think we are due for a legit threat in the return game.

Philly B (the huddler) is a real life Indiana Jones, so uh yea he is the man

With our offense this year we are really going to need strong special teams play. Ginn was huge for us as far as field position..allowing our (mostly) anemic offense to at least get in position to put up points. Brown looks like Ginn when he runs. His legs don't look quite as long and probably doesn't have quite as much straight line speed but he looks like he doesn't waste time dancing when he gets it, which bodes well for his ability. OSU players are taught about as well as anyone in the country at running routes and running on ST. I think he'll make the roster.

Allen played what State calls the "Joker" position. Just like a lot of teams that use this position the player is a cross between a S, and a LB. Most think of it as a Safety in the box type player. So moving him to Safety would make a lot of sense.

As a State fan, I don't care where they play him. Just good to see one of us on the team.

The one with speed is a given. Folks go goo goo over speed.

As for the other one? Your guess is as good as any. Most times I can't even understand what he is trying to say. Is it humor? Is it sarcasm? Is is some form of san script? Dude just puzzles me no end. And what is the obsession with dirt?

Every time I watch this kids highlights he reminds me of Golden Tate

He's a pretty cool guy that travels the world, what's not to like?

Don't we go through this every year with a udfa wr? Supposed to be the next best thing and always fails?
Waiting for us to sign a guy with the last name Frash

His posting can be a little to long. After 3 paragraphs my minds starts wandering.

When you have to explain a joke, it does not hold its value.
