Putting McCarthy and Ward in there is a little disingenuous, but I guess we'll have to accept it considering the conversation (but not without context). You better start looking at stats that speak to efficiency (e.g. passer rating, yards, TD-INT ratio). Don't confuse making it to the playoffs or going from the bottom to staying in the bottom third of the league as something to praise without some context. Both Tagovailoa and Jacoby Brissett were arguably better than Bryce. They were more efficient QBs by most metrics that matter. The fact that we're discussing a third-year QB with the likes of busts, backups and virtual rookies should make you pipe down a bit in my estimation. I mean, I can accept the reality of the situation--the option is pretty much a nohbrainer--but Bryce needs to improve greatly before I consider him a franchise-level starter.

A contract is likely to be based on the past 2 year's production and will probably be for 3 years or so. This chart tells you why we should move on: he has peaked, in all likelihood. Rico will be 28, I believe, this summer. If you had to put a pin in thehear RBs start to decline sharply, it would be 28 or 29. This ENTIRE thread is based on him getting a 5th year option. He has earned it. He's currently player with too much high/lows to justify a long term deal and to build around completely. Even at that, he's better than many current starters. You are blind if you think he didn't have several extremely impressive games this season. I'm not blind. He also had several terrible games. You think he sucks and would never change your opinion no matter what you see on the field. You are also wrong. If he doesn't eliminate his clunkers then you cut him and find your next QB. No goalposts being moved.

I agree with this, wholeheartedly. Bryce tantalizingly has his moments, even his games. This past Saturday was one of those. He really became the Mouse that Roared after the team fell behind and the o-line started collapsing. And, in truth, I think had the play calling been better at the end, he might well have brought us back into another lead change. Talk about a legendary moment just missed. I'm going to get lambasted for this but as a cautionary tale, I want to just say we're sitting at a spot that the San Diego Chargers were way back in the day. They had a short-ish QB on a rebuilding team that was underwhelming most games, but had some really good moments. They decided instead to take a gamble on drafting someone new and letting that QB, Drew Brees, go find someone more willing to let him develop. They turned around and had a draft debacle with Eli Manning/Phillip Rivers, ending up with Rivers in the end. We've got to remember that Brees wasn't who he would become at that time, it would take a coach willing to open up the offense and give the tough young kid a chance to grow. Rivers would become the poster child for the guy who almost was. Brees will get a gold jacket someday to go with the Saints only Superbowl win. Bryce probably isn't Brees, only one guy was and he barely got the chance to be him. Giving Bryce another season, maybe two, on squad gives us the luxury of testing the waters and the growth. QBs early in their careers take time. We saw Rogers last night at the end of his career (maybe), sputtering out before he heads to the barn for his spot in the HoF and we have to remember him at his best, after sitting on the bench for three years. And we have to look at the other side of that coin last night, CJ Stroud, a draft classmate of Bryce's who soared out of the gates but who has come to earth since. He's still a good QB with a long runway ahead of him, but his performance under the big spotlight wasn't as strong as Bryce's on this particular weekend. I'm not 100 percent sure Bryce will be the guy. I'd like to see some more fire in the young man, some push, something that shows he can force his will on the other team's defense. I am, however, seeing a kid that can make the throws, who can improvise and who amazingly can run braver and faster than I really thought he could. I think he needs time, he needs more confidence and he needs more brave coaching. If he doesn't get that here, I think he might find it elsewhere. And we'd find ourselves like the Spanos family, sitting on the couch in February asking Phillip Rivers to pass the chips during the Super Bowl commercial breaks year after year.

The issue is the position Bryce plays. Finding a good/great quarterback isn't easy. Plus, it sometimes takes years for these guys to actually become good/great. What you have to look for is progress instead of regression. Bryce has shown that. Can he put it all together? We don't know yet. But that's why you place a smaller bet with the 5th year option, and wait to see. You could be wrong and lose your 30 mil bet, but you didn't hitch your wagon long-term and lose much more.

There’s more bad than good right now, but there’s less bad than there was earlier in his career. He’s only 24 and he’s showing signs of improvement. He may never become consistent enough to justify a long term contract, but he’s shown enough to roll the dice on what effectively will turn into a 2 year, $30MM contract for the next two years to see if he can earn something longer. Sure, in his one season starting, Howell managed to throw for 3,946 yards and toss 21 TDs, but it took throwing the ball an astounding 612 times. He also threw 21 INTs (for a particularly egregious 3.4 INT%). For all the talk of him being a deep ball thrower, he still only averaged 6.4 YPA, with an average air yards of 5.6 yards per attempt. And for all the excuses of Washington’s line giving him no protection (65 sacks taken that year), he was only pressured on 22.7% of his dropbacks, which is a few percentage points lower than what Bryce has had to deal with each year (24.2, 26.7, and 24.0%). These are all numbers that are at best roughly equivalent to Bryce’s production the past two years. It’s wild to me people can claim so confidently that he’s a better QB.

Enjoy being wrong again. The majority of the league's media and NFL decision makers (including our own front office and coaching staff) know it's a no brainer to sign a 5th year option and see what happens. But hey, keep up the good work with your hot takes.

5 of the top 10 defenses in the league didn't even make it to the playoffs. To suggest that the roster isn't built to compete right now because the defense isn't ranked highly is not backed up by reality when the majority of the top defenses didn't even make the playoffs. I'm not arguing that the defense doesn't need to be upgraded. So does the offense. Every team in the league could say they need upgrades at various positions. I'm arguing that upgrading the defense won't matter, at all, so long as Bryce Young is the QB.

As well as we scouted and drafted this season if we can scout similarly this season we can find our own Tyler Shough type in the 3-5 round. Someone who csb takeover after the 5th year option runs out

so u or anyone can just ook at Bryce Young's #'s & tell that he is in fact one of the worst statistically speaking starting Qbs in the NFL .so Dan Morgan would have to obvisouly think at this point that Bryce Young still has not reached his ceiling ? ladies & gents there is an alarming pattern here of just one project after the next whether it be a very raw XL, DJ Johnson ,or Trevin Wallace , a RB with a torn ACL or one of the smallest players in the entire NFL with supposedly a super processor the list goes on & on where the Panthers have invested ALOT & got little in return from developing these players that they thought had high upsides when you start paying players based solely off of potential rather than production then that's just bad buisness..just saying
