I'm skeptical he can replicate his performance with the 49ers. But I'd prefer him to some of the other candidates being discussed.

No point in letting Wilks go just to hire a younger, less experienced version of him. We need an OFFENSIVE-MINDED coach, period.

The way I see it there are two paths: PATH #1: Hire Steve Wilks full time and bring in Derek Carr - and a competent O.C. - to give us an at least average passing game and use the draft to (hopefully) upgrade the pass rush and offensive weapons, particularly WR depth and TE. PATH #2: Hit reboot and replace Wilks with a young offensive mind who can develop a QB we draft in the 1st round, by trading up if necessary.

If we had Derek Carr at QB right now we'd likely have already clinched the division. He's a solid QB. That said, in the long run we can do better.

At this point who the fug knows.

This is exactly why we need to go get a young offensive-minded HC. A good one can make a pedestrian QB look really good and a good QB look top-tier. Baker is an example of a pedestrian QB playing really well. Jalen Hurts is an example of a good QB playing at an MVP level. Both are examples of how much a good offensive mind at HC matters when it comes to QB play and development. Shane Steichen needs to be at the top of our list. I don't know if he'd be interested in us if a team like the Chargers with an established franchise QB has an opening, but we damn sure better try to lure him here.

Steichen + Anthony Richardson is my ideal scenario. We'd probably need a bridge QB (Minshew?) for a year but that's a hell of a combo to build the future of the franchise around.

I'm torn on this. On one hand, there's no doubt that Steve Wilks HAS earned the job. Given the circumstances he's done far better than anyone should have been rightly expected to and there's no question he has shown the leadership ability to be an NFL head coach and is loved by the players. However, I'm still not sure it's the best move for the franchise long-term. The fact is we're almost certainly going to be drafting a QB next year in the 1st round. Whether it's by staying put and seeing who falls or by trading up and giving up a bunch of future draft picks to do it. Whatever else we do this offseason we MUST get this right and that starts with putting a staff in place that can develop whoever this QB is going to be. Frankly, I'm not very confident in Wilks in this regard. I certainly trust him with the defense and developing those players, and his approach to the run game has certainly worked. But when it comes to QB - especially if we miss out on a more pro-ready prospect like Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud - we really need a staff who is capable of developing whoever we pick and in that regard having a defensive-minded HC is going to be, I fear, to our detriment. Let's say we miss out on Young and Stroud and instead end up picking a raw "tools" QB like Anthony Richardson. Would you rather have some failed former HC-turned-OC and/or QB coach developing him while Wilks oversees from a distance or would you rather have a young offensive mind like Shane Steichen as HC having a hands-on role in developing him as our new franchise QB and building an offensive scheme designed to get the absolute most out of him? If I knew we could end up with a pro-ready QB like Bryce Young then I'd be much more supportive of Wilks as the long-term answer. I just worry that having a defensive-minded HC will limit our ability to develop a less NFL-ready option, which is looking more and more likely like what we're going to end up with.

I wish I knew exactly how they grade RBs. For a position so dependent on the OL's performance how do you grade the runner? I get yards after contact and broken tackles but how do you quantify vision? And do you take points away for playing behind a good run blocking OL?

I've been in full tank mode since week 3... but fug it. Let's win the goddamn division.

Justin Fields can't throw. If we should have drafted anyone over Horn it's Micah Parsons.

It doesn't matter, though. Because any good offensive staff is almost certainly going to get hired away to be head coaches in relatively short order if they produce results here. That's the real benefit to having a good offensive-minded HC. You always have that mind in the building regardless of who else is on-staff. Andy Reid is the perfect example. If you can get the right HC/QB combo then you're set for the long haul. If you only get one side of it, then you get what we saw with Ron Rivera and Cam Newton. Maybe some short-term success, but in the long run it likely falls apart. I'm not entirely convinced we won't see a repeat of this in Buffalo in the next few years.
