Will the Panthers draft a quarterback?

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

In the high rounds, the answer is obviously not.

But if you look at the players who were brought in for pre-draft workouts, there were more QBs on the list than you might normally expect. That would make me think that the team might be looking at backup / emergency / tryout / long-term project options.

So do you foresee the Panthers actually using a lower round pic on a QB prospect?

If so, do you have anyone in particular you'd like to see them get?

And final question: Do you see any possibility of current backup Derek Anderson's job being in jeopardy?

Good topic Mr. Scot. I have also noticed the in-house QB visits as well, and have thought about whom we might take later in the draft.  I have 5-6 viable candidates.

5th-6th Round - Aaron Murray and Logan Thomas

Logan Thomas is a poor man's Cam Newton.  He's built the same physically, ay 6'6" 250lbs, with immense potential, but he's very very raw.

Aaron Murray could be a steal.. reminds me of Russell Wilson a bit.

7th Round-UFA -

Garret Gilbert - he was the top QB high school recruit in the nation 4 years ago, and committed to Texas before transferring to Ole Miss.  High potential.

Connor Shaw - USC

Taj Boyd - Clemson

Stephen Morris - Miami

I like most of these guys because they have some mobility, winners in college, and great stats.  A few of these guys have small measurable's which could be hurting their stock.

I have to think one of these men listed will be in camp with us this year.

I think Garrett Gilbert is the guy I would focus on if I was going to draft a QB. Sure, he ran simple spread offense at SMU, but the dude looks like he could develop into a star at some point. I'm sure he'd also be available in the 6th or 7th and is more akin to Cam than Derek Anderson is.

Actually I like most of the quarterbacks you list here, especially Aaron, Connor and Gilbert if we could get them in the 7th round or undrafted.

    • I tend to look at all of these guys and wonder how committed they are to doing special teams? It's a big deal when you're fighting for roster spots. And we need massive refreshes to all phases of the special teams game. And the idea that four or five of these players could see rotational use outside of special teams would be a win. This team has accumulated quite a bit of dead wood over the last five years and its time to take an axe to some of it. These new fellows have a shot to benefit from that if they can really push. That being said, wow that receivers room is crowded right now. I'm not sure if I was a vet player with more than 2 years experience other than Adam Thielen if I'd be too sure of my future here. Tet is guaranteed a spot, Coker earned his for sure and they aren't done with XL developing yet. That's only two to three spots left for the entire room. It's going to be very competitive and better for Bryce's future, too. Safety and linebacker are the opportunity spots here this season. There's room for the right guy and we may see a starter eventually from one of these UDFAs, either by merit or injury.
    • Aho and Jarvis just gripping it too tight right now. Relax, play their 200 ft game and the shots will start to find the net. Freddie has been excellent and welcome back Mista Svechnikov. Burns.....well, thank goodness for Slavin.
    • Supposedly he plans on staying in college for all 4 years.
