The premise of the thread is "If we draft a defensive player, who do you like". You shunned the thread rather and went on a pointless diatribe rather than answering the question. Of course most of us want offensive players ideally an LT or a WR.

Anything outside of a LT or a WR is a failure, but of course if he wouldn't have pissed of our starting pro bowl LT, and gave away the greatest Panther ever, and failed to sign Nicks who a 5th grader could have signed, we wouldn't be in this situation.

I have multiple times. There is not a defensive player I like for us at 28. 0. The offense is so fuging pathetic, they shouldn't even draft a defensive player. I'll say my favorite stat again.

Since drafting Cam Newton in 2011, they've only drafted one other starter on that side of the ball. Amini, who missed most of last year, is the only draft pick they've invested on offense in the first two rounds since drafting Cam.

That's not the point of this thread. We all know Carolina has insufficiently helped out Cam and the offense with an infusion of talent.

But...

...IF the Panthers were to go defense in round one, who would you prefer? If you type a defensive player's name, will you melt or something? I want offense too, but that's not the point if this hypothetical thread.

If we went Defense, I'd prefer Calvin Pryor.

I'm 100% against drafting a defensive player with the first pick and I don't care who it is. We are 4 years in and the talent surrounding Cam Newton has declined every single year. We are already paying him 14.5 in 2015 and that number will only go up. That's like buying a Lamborghini and putting Walmart tires on it. This poo has to stop.

The man stood on the damn podium and said he wanted a WR. He said at the pro bowl he has faith in management to surround him with weapons and we all know what he meant.

What have people been saying all offseason? Gettleman's main goal was to surround Cam Newton with weapons. You can not afford to keep telling Cam to fug off. When Cam doesn't trust his teammates to get the job done, he turns into bad Cam. I don't have faith in Byron Bell as our starting LT or Jerricho Cotchery as our #1 WR that's fuging insane.

We were the #2 defense and one of the worst passing offenses in the league, now we have a down graded wr crew, and a worse oline, and y'all are sitting here discussing take another defensive player?? fug all that noise.

Any WR we draft even in the 2nd round would make our corps better than last season. I hate the cuttin of Smitty as much as the next guy, but he was not producing up to what he was going to be paid the 2 years after next if we kept him. Ginn was a nobody who Cam turned into a somebody, and LaFell straight up sucked. Cotch, Avant and Underwood are all better receivers than those 2 and our rookie will likely be more productive than Smitty - even if not immediately. In the first round we have to go BPA on defense or tackle and if none are there then we could go WR.

People faile to realize that Steve Smith went up against the best cbs every game, they rolled coverage his way. Jason Avant and Jerricho Cotchery, never had to be THE man like Steve Smith did here. You think Steve Smith wasn't producing, wait until you see Sherman on Cotchery.

I refuse to accept the idea, so now I'm not even going to put myself in a position that somewhat justifies it.

Steve Smith was covered either by a zone defense or man to man coverage with the best corner, but they never rolled coverage his way to help out the corner. In zones he'd be covered by 1 man in whichever zone. A true number 1 with single coverage every single play of every game would get at least 1600+ yards with ease and 10+ touchdowns. While Smitty was covered by the best corner (and he wasn't always, there were plays where Ginn was on the field that they had #1 covering him and even Olsen at times), he was never doubled. Calvin Johnson against single coverage for an entire season would get 3000 yards. It's not like he put up 800 yards against double coverage every game. Megatron puts up twice what Smitty did against double AND triple coverage than Smitty against single. Is it not clear to you that Smitty's getting old and is not a number 1? If we could've kept him for $5m/year and moved him to the slot that would've been perfect, but we couldn't. If we kept him he would've been making $10m+/year. It's what had to be done, though the way it was done was wrong.

If its gonna be a defensive guy then by all means get the LBer.  If were gonna be good already then make the step to being great.  Eliminate all doubt that if you play the Panthers the D will wreck you.  Im sure thats gonna happen anyway but if we dont get that O weapon then this will have to do.

    • The same folks crying about the OL right now were crying about it in 2023 too. We have tied up over 100 million dollars in two interior olinemen alone and we have Taylor Moton inked to a recent extension. We've invested multiple first and second round picks in the offense. We hired an offensive minded head coach. This is an offensive team. The offense needs to produce or people need to be replaced.
    • This is the same place that has ridiculed and blasted Caleb Williams at every opportunity he has his team sitting at 10-4 in the same NFC that the Panthers are competing in. And their division in the NFC North is as or more competitive as our division. Yet from the same people who have very high standards for Williams we get every excuse imaginable for the smallest starting QB in the league even when he and his team continue to disappoint when the pressure is on. You lot aren't any less inconsistent than anyone else.
    • The Panthers are 9th in cap spent on offense this year.  However next season is already a different story  The Panthers as it stands right now will be 18th in cap spent on offense and 8th in cap spent on defense  The Panthers are currently set to spend more on defense next year than they are on offense this season Guys like Jaycee and Moehrig cap numbers take a big jump. Wharton has a massive cap hit   Jaycee Moehrig and Wharton in 2025 The same 3 in 2026 So this same defense as it stands right now will cost more in 2026 than this offense does right now… Got anything else you want to try?
