with ginn gone who is our new kr/pr guy?

Recommended Posts

You talking about kick returns or punt returns?  Punt returns are as important as ever, kick returns... not so much.

Both.  When you can actually take a KR, you want someone who can make the most out of those limited opportunities.

On a punt return, ideally you would like a Ginn type guy.

And combining the two, you want a guy who is capable of both and decent at his position as well.

I think this is what will hurt us the most. Ginn was a legit return man. Game changer, and now he is gone. Personally, I think Underwood surprises us all and becomes the guy.

Jim Leonhard is available and will likely be available toward the start of the season.  If no one emerges as a run-it-back threat, he could be had.  He is not a speedy guy nor is he known for a ton of return yards but to quote Rex Ryan he could "catch a punt in a hurricane."

If the Panthers offense brings anything to the field this year - with their potential for big time plays from a big arm - field position will not matter as much as just having possession.

I think whoever we can bring in that can do both of those will get a roster spot.  Obviously if he can contribute as a potential starter and play a depth role, his value increases.  Or perhaps a guy who can tackle and make plays on special teams. I think Underwood will have a job just because you can coach speed and he has it.  The guy I want to see improve in a huge way this year if he can stay healthy is Barner.  He has the shiftiness to be a force if he can be durable enough to play week in and out.  This is really Pilares last big opportunity to show the coaches what he can do and he needs to step up in a big way.  There is actually a lot of potential on this offensive unit as long as someone can step up big on the left side of the line,  We have brought in a bunch of guys and will likely add a few more.  All we need is one durable competent guy who doesn't have to be a all-pro as long as he isn't a leaky sieve. If we bring in enough guys hopefully we find a diamond in the rough.  I would love it to be someone already on the team. But if it someone we bring in that would be awesome.  I think we could be a few players away from a very special team.  We some some guys to step up in a big way.

Brown or Barner

Out of all the WRs we lost, Ginn is the one I wish we'd kept the most.

I know Steve, but Ginn seemed to be finally coming into his own in Carolina. Was a deep threat for us and a kick return nightmare for other teams. Plus he's much younger than 89. Not saying he'd ever be as good as Steve was for us. But looking forward Ginn wouldn't have been a horrible guy to have around.
