Notes on the safety group & secondary

I can't wait to see them guys!!!! That's who I want to see the most of. Our defense is going to be much more nastier than last year. Huge UPGRADE!!!!

Harper and Decoud are upgrades over Mitchell and Mikell IMO. Seriously. Two pro bowlers. Harper is old and slow but the man brings vet leadership and nastiness. A much better SS than Mikell. I expect 4 sacks from the man this season. Decoud's coverage is beyond Mitchell. A ball hawker.

Adding Cason pumped me up! Wanted him last year, finally got it now. He's the best legitimate corner we have since Gamble. I think he can bring that production like what Gamble left.

Bene will be the no3 corner by the end of the day. Godfrey won't be able to stay with Bene.

Love Lester, Tre, and White!!!

Hate the the Joshes: Norman and Thomas. Both need to be cut instantly!!!

Don't like Dockery.

I believe we'll add another vet after cuts: Terrell Thomas or Samuels.

Nothing says we can't have 5 safeties on the roster. Given Jones' spot on special teams (and that he might be the best equipped to chase Brandin Cooks down twice a year), I think we'll roll with Harper, DeCoud, Lester, Boston, and Jones.

It's possible, but I'm thinking Godfrey's position flexibility might prohibit it.

Harper is still a solid player if used correctly. Very useful in the redzone against tight ends and of course is solid in the box. I expect somewhat of a rotation at the safety position this year.

Agreed I don't understand why everyone is so disgruntled with him. He isn't being asked to play Free Safety. He should be serviceable.

I read this article on Cason from ESPN.  I have a lot of faith that he will start and actually play well with our front 7. If he doesn't start  then he will be a key rotational CB that will still see a lot more playing time compare to his stint in Arizona. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Cason the starting CB in San Diego when Rivera was the Defensive Coordinator on the number one defense? Rivera has spent years with Cason and obviously knows how to use him.

I'm betting now that Cason will end up having a bounceback season and hit the FA market signing a nice multi year contract with another team.

Now whats all this talk of Lester being cut? I'm sorry but I just don't see it. He proved himself as a UDFA last year and he saw a lot of time on the field. I believe Jones could be the odd man out. Yes he is a special teams ace but could Boston replace him?

This is how I see our secondary working out

Starting CBs: Cason, White

Nickelback: Godfrey (I really think Godfrey could end up shining as a CB and become a starter)

Dime: Benwikere ( Probably rotate in on some nickle packages.)

Dockery  will be back up. I really want  Norman to step up and be that guy but I don't think he has what it takes. Still crazier things have happened so I will say he could have a small chance of making the team. Thomas and Dockery will probably end up as the back up CB but Thomas has a good chance of beating out Dockery but I'm going to bet on Dockery beating him out this year.

FS: Decoud

SS:Harper

Boston and Lester will be the back up. I believe Lester will share a good amount of playing time with Harper especially on passing downs.

I don't see Jones making the team.

maybe the possibility exists pre-achilles injury,, but I find it hard to believe he'll be able to compete and outproduce either on the outside or at nickle...

color me shocked if he even makes the team..

I'd agree with you, but they sound serious about giving him a major role in the secondary.  It's still shocking to me that he wasn't a cap casualty.

don't let their pep rally fool you.  the news came immediately after drafting a safety, effectively pushing him out of a job and they come across more to me like they are giving him one last ditch effort to make the team in some capacity.

I don't see how he's going to excel at a position like CB one year out from tearing that achilles.  And so I think there's a very good chance he doesn't make it through camp.

Those are valid points.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
