Give Me the Low Down on Charlotte, NC

This thread, again?

Charlotte is the only city worth living in in NC. Much better than anything you're used to in Western NY. Anywhere else and you'll think you're in an episode of Eastbound and Down.

Horse poo.

Wilmington is an awesome place to live.  It's great for young folks, families, empty nesters, and retirees.

Give me ILM over any city in NC.

Neither of those mean anything. Cities are not simply defined by the population within arbitrary borders. Area is useless as well.

Metro areas are a much better measure:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_metropolitan_areas_of_the_United_States

RR accused ABH of using Charlotte's metro population vs city limits population of San Francisco and Boston, which isn't the case.

I was explaining that Charlotte has the population but not the density of those other cities.

Metro areas are good for determining TV viewership. But not so much for living in a city. If I move to Charlotte, I'm not concerned with small towns like Maiden, Landis or Harrisburg, whose residents likely do not contribute to the tax base to increase public service where I live.

Right. Which is why SF and BOS aren't comparable cities to CLT

I've been to a couple restaurants and other places that specifically remind me of Greenville, SC. And I think they've done a great job with the gentrification and redesign of the downtown area.

Charlotte? As many places over the many, many years I've been going there... nothing strikes me as uniquely Charlotte. Nothing says, "I want to bring ________ to Charlotte to see this."

Next time you're in town for a Panthers game or some other reason you should consider checking out the Common Market in Plaza Midwood or Alexander Michael's in historic 4th ward.

What makes Charlotte unique, imo, is the variety of neighborhoods that have their own distinct character and feel.  Dozens of neighborhoods seem like they have their own 'mini downtown' with bars, restaurants, shopping, etc.

Only rule: avoid Montford

Why not?

The city population is similar.

The regional population is not comparable; San Francisco's metro area consists of the entire Bay Area (including Oakland and Santa Clara) whereas Charlotte's biggest suburb is Concord (~80,000)

The entire northeast is filled with people who haven't moved to Charlotte yet so that is a silly comparison to begin with.

So is DC and Detroit. But if you have ever been to SF, DC or DET it should be completely obvious that none of those are peer cities to CLT. Much bigger and established urban areas

size of urban area as the standard? Yes charlotte lacks there.

But on that note, that would have noncentralized, sprawling cities like LA and Jacksonville as Charlotte's peers.

Thank you, we will give it a try.

LA is #2 metro, Charlotte #23 Jacksonville #40.

J-Ville is somewhat similar although crappier I think.

LA shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as CLT.

Charlotte is extremely different from the way it was 20 years ago.

Some things are good about that, some are bad.

Good include the city growing, becoming more nationally known, and downtown/uptown is ACTUALLY a place to go now.

Unlike 15 years ago, when no one....NO ONE lived downtown, and if you said let's go downtown and go out, people wondered what you were smoking (here's a hint, it was probably crack, bc that was the place to find it then, and to be more honest, who the fug goes out downtown now....oh wait, all the transplants)

But we have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many Northerners who come down here and complain like its the fuging Complaint Convention 2014

wahhh there's too much traffic- why do you think there is so much? b/c all you guys came down and our city couldn't structurally handle this influx

wahhhh its too hot- bitch you moved to the South, what the fug do you expect at 12pm in the afternoon? YEAH ITS HOT. WELCOME.

wahhhhh people can't drive in the snow- I'll put money on that the only ones driving in the snow are the ones that think they can- the northerners. Us southerners? Oh hell no- bread, milk, see you in 3 days when its melted.

BIGGEST problem I have are the Steelers fans. They come from everywhere......its like the bandwaggoner mecca or something here for Steelers fans.

If I read correctly and your wife is a Steelers fan, I will welcome you with open arms and you are already on the right track being a Panthers fan.

But......listen bro. I know a good divorce lawyer.....and lots of cute single female Panthers fans.

Its the only way my friend, the only way.

LA is very much a sprawling city with a small distinct downtown "urban area" in relation to the whole city... very much like charlotte.

Is that what you meant by "urban area" or are we going back to metro population again?
