Being a game of inches, that challenge can sometimes affect the outcome of a game. Referees are sometimes left to guess how far a player advanced the ball, affecting a third-down conversion, or even a touchdown call. Researchers at N.C. State University say they might have a solution to the problem. In collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University and Disney Research, scientists have developed a system that can track a football in three-dimensional space using low-frequency magnetic fields, particularly useful when the ball is blocked from view. Using high-frequency waves to track a football isn’t a new concept, but the problem with previous versions of the idea was that the players’ bodies would absorb those waves, making it impossible to accurately track the ball.

The world cup is implementing technology to detect when a ball crosses the goal line. This is something the NFL should've done years ago. If Goodell wanted to make a name for himself, instead of changing all the fuging rules of football, all he had to do was drive the NFL into the technological age. He would've been way more liked than he is now.

I'm still not sure why they haven't implemented something that tracks where the ball is on the field. It really wouldn't be that hard to implement, and refs need to be making way less decisions.

Maybe for the same reason that baseball has stayed away feom technology..they feel it takes aaway from the game. People love drama and controversy as much as they love the game. Remember that Seahawks touchdown 2 years ago they won on...

Call me old school but the refs are as much a part of the game as the players.

Next everyone will wear sensors and detect holding and all other penalties.

Leave it alone.  We got replay when they screw up a spot but for the most part they get it right.

The refs are only there to make sure the game is played the way it should. Technology would help them enforce that and get it right way more often than they ever would alone. If you are a true football fan, you would want the game to be as pure as you want it without monumental human errors. Even with replay, refs still royally screw it up.

I can't wait till we replace the players with robots that never retire or get tired. Football 24/7!!!

Wow, I bet you oppose cell phones, internet, tv, radio x and birth control because we haven't always had those

And what guarantee do you have that one punt of the football or one Steve Smith spin doesn't throw it out of whack by a inch or two or more.

You can't.  The spotting of the football is pretty good for the most part.  Occasionally they do a  lousy job of spotting it. And if it is that bad they challenge it.  I would say 7-10 challenges are upheld and the team loses a timeout.

Leave it alone.  Not worth the headache.

Typical huddle response.  Your not a true fan if you don't agree with me.

    • He’s kind of overrated to be honest. Never really felt like a true #1 or elevated his play to become a guy the defense really has to worry about.
    • I'm going to be real, the reason that vote ended up so lop-sided by the end was directly due to my programming. So there's nothing tongue in cheek about it. Also I left PFF after the Collinsworth acquisition (didn't want to move to Cincy) but have stayed involved in analytics via backdoor channels, but I can absolutely say that the experience was eye-opening, not because those guys are unquestionable football savants and that I became one by proxy, but because the amount of information that becomes available outside of what the typical fan has access to is revelatory and also really drives home how much context is still being missed even with all of that information. You don't discover that you know everything, you discover how much you still can't know no matter how hard you try, hence my point about the NFL not being able to figure out what makes a QB good. There's a lot of AI work going into that now and even that only seems to further confuse things vs. actually enlighten the problem. In the professional realm teams don't really talk about quarterbacks as A strictly being better than B, but how A can potentially perform better than B given a specific context of C. Of course those contexts may be wider for A than B, but there's also contexts where B can outshine A, even with lesser talent surrounding them. So what good teams strive to do is ultimately define a process of how they want their entire team to operate under schematically, find players that fit that scheme, and hopefully find a guy whose skillset will be maximized running that scheme with those players. Where bad teams fall of the wagon is constantly shifting those schemes and chasing bad fits or fads vs. sticking with a core identity and developing it.
    • there is a 100 mile long list of NFL players and coaches going to bat and defending horrible play from teammates.
