A Hall of Fame question you probably haven't thought of

"First Panther to make the Hall of Fame" is a question that gets thrown around a lot.  General discussion revolves around guys like Steve Smith, Julius Peppers, Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, etc.

But what about these two names?

Jordan Gross

Ryan Kalil

While I wouldn't necessarily bet on either of them being the first Panthers to make the Hall of Fame, both have been legitimately discussed as being the best at the NFL at their respective positions from time to time.  Those are the kind of offensive linemen that get mentioned when Hall of Fame voters talk.

So my question: Will either Gross or Kalil merit Pro Football Hall of Fame consideration?

If not, what do they lack?

How about Thomas Davis, I'm his biggest fan, I know he does get recognition for his achievements but to play at the level he does after what he has been through is unprecedented

No. Linemen don't get recognized unless they have numerous Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections.

Like Kalil and Gross?

Watching older games and seeing Kalil and Gross play really makes me appreciate what they do/did. One of my favorite plays with Kalil was Cam threw an interception and Kalil just knocks two defensive linemen to the side and tackles the guy who intercepted the pass.

I'm a brit by the way, I understand hof is reserved for the very top, but do they ever award on (not quite the word I know but) nostalgia?

I always thought it was more for those who had an impact on the game. Like TO who has amazing stats I doubt he'll get in because of his personality.

They both may get in, but it'll take some time.

I have another name for you all to consider. This guy has better stats than most of those at his position who did get in the HOF, certainly better stats than the first guy at his position to get in.

John Kasay.

Uhmmmm...

Jordan Gross - 3x Pro Bowler, 1x AP First-Team All-Pro

Ryan Kalil - 4x Pro Bowler, 1x AP First-Team All-Pro, 1x AP Second-Team All-Pro

So what was your point again?

that's not enough all-pro selections or pro bowl selections to get into the hall of fame.

linemen would need at least 5 all-pro selections and equal or more pro bowl selections. Even then some with at least 5 still have a hard time.

John Kasay is statistically among the top 2 best kickers in NFL history when you consider number of kicks and length of kicks.

    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
    • How do I activate said Krispy Kreme deal? I'm stoned man you can't be playing with me about this...
    • When the broadcast showed the two benches side by side during the last TV timeout, it was pretty obvious the whole operation is a shitshow. If I was the owner, I would play that clip, with commentary, on the jumbotron at MSG as I fired the coach, GM, President, the whole lot. Bring in your AHL leadership team, wholesale, to finish out the season and start from scratch next year.  Can't fire all the players and fold the season. But, hopefully decapitating the zombie will light a fire under the body and burn out the cancer of the roster. (It makes sense if you don't think about it...) There are obviously issues on the roster. But, you can't have the entire coaching staff completely tuned out with 5 minutes left in a 2 goal game this early in the season. And you can't trust the people that hired them to hire the next staff. If you trust your AHL GM/Scouts, let them run the deadline firesale.   ...     Please don't let the owner read any of this. Because, this poo is hilarous!
