A stat no one has brought up

Someone pointed this out to me at a bar today, where other Panthers fan actually existed, which was surprising. 

 

He asked when the last time we won an opener was?

 

It's been six fuging years since we've won an opener.

 

Last time? 2008, in San Diego, in one of this team's greatest games of all time. Jake hit Rosario in the back of the end zone as time expired. 

 

The subsequent years saw the punishing loss to the Eagles, then the Jimmy Debacle with the Giants, then the Cardinals game we should have won, then Tampa, and last year the Seachickens,

 

That's five in a row. Most outsiders would have thought with a backup QB and having the worst WR in the history of football, we should have lost today. Hopefully those people lost their money, and Peter King hopefully too.

 

We actually one back to back opening games, both on the road in 07-08, the other was against the Rams. The Panthers are 7-13 all time on opening weekend. Since 2004, we are 3-8 after today. 

 

So maybe this will start a change of mantra. Since Chico finally won an opener, maybe he can get a win after a bye week, and then muster again back to back winning seasons.

 

BTW I wasn't impressed with any other team in the division today. Everyone said Byrd would be the difference in New Orleans, and they gave up just as many points as before. The Falcons are terrible.

Too early to tell if it will mean anything over the course of a 16-game season but considering what the expectations were for that game you have to acknowledge what Atlanta did was no small feat. They still have their flaws which were never going to be fixed over a single offseason but if they stay healthy they will not be an easy out and that goes for the entire division.

      The year he had another edge rusher opposite him in Reddick, Reddick ended up having more sacks. Burns was good at rushing the passer here but he was taken out of plays far too often by a single TE or you'd never even known he was in the game at all.  The Rams offer was equivalent to prime Khalil Mack or a TJ Watt. Those guys single handedly took over games and stopped drives. I can't remember a game Burns ever did that. Do we wish we had the level of production hes giving right now? Of course. Do I think we'd have it here. No.  At the time, his production was on par with Reddick, not Parsons. Pay production and incentivise potential.

      Technically our guys are in the top 6 in sacks for rookies and Scourton is tied for the lead.

      That's why so many said he wasn't worth it here, there was only DB and it wasn't enough. If Burns is feasting then the other guys in NY are doing enough already, Burns is just collecting the stats. It's what he eas built for and is finally in his perfect space to succeed. Im not as in on the new guys yet. More is an understatement but the good news is that they are rookies.
