Question for you ex-offensive linemen...

 

Yesterday, the Panthers rotated o-linemen due to conditioning and heat concerns. Rivera talked about how it helped having fresh bodies coming in. So the question is, why don't we see this more often?

 

I understand the chemistry and communication issues. Are these not perhaps offset by getting occasional rest during the game? D-lines rotate all the time. Why is it important for them but not for o-linemen?

 

This is something I've often wondered about. And to take it a step further, you could tailor personnel groupings to the play call, i.e. better pass protection vs pulling specialists, etc.

 

Educate me Huddle.

Only problem with this part is, you tip off the D to your play selection.

My guess (and purely that), is that often times there is a sizable difference between O-linemen and their backup, but what we have right now is a narrow, if any gap between the talent of our starters and the talent of our backups and because of this, you can rotate a ton and instead of losing the quality of O-line play, actually probably increase the overall level of O-line play.  I know all of this because I never played football at any significant level, so I am a genius.

Cause other teams have more certainty on their line.

Ironically (since you didn't play) this answer makes the most sense to me.

 

And as to those talking about tipping off plays, it is also an opportunity for mis-direction. Think about it another way...the shotgun formation historically signals a passing play, yet offenses still use it extensively.

      Given that the immediate impact we need at edge. We almost certainly address that in Free agency, not in the draft. Same with Linebacker, unless Styles or Allen is still there at 19. I think the same for OT.  What is the position that we could draft in the 1st round and get immediate help in the first is how im approaching their decision-making  I know ill get dragged for this, but im thinking they go DT in the first. A guy that can play right away and be a complement to D.Brown to wreak havoc at the LOS.   So unless a top tier LB is there, I think DT will be the move.

      I think people forget that by his last season Steve Smith had the ass and he played like it - and for no really good reason other than that other stars were emerging on the team and he didn't want to share the spot light.  He was more of a locker room distraction than he was worth. He went on to have great performances with the Ravens' but G-man made the right move allowing him to move on from here.  I personally think it was addition by subtraction and we don't have a super bowl run with Smith on the roster. Steve Smith remains a narcissist who I've never seen internalize his own culpability when it comes to his relationships with others - it's always somebody else's fault as to why he was forced to act like an asshole. This video is a product ad.  I'm cringed that either of these two Panther greats are party to it.

      I think the ‘issue’ here is that we had two guys that clashed for several reasons. In some ways they were different, but in other ways they had a lot in common, and sadly they couldn’t see the forest for the trees. Sometimes when you have two people like that together they are either going to love or hate each other, and if it’s the latter, you need someone to mediate and hope the two individuals are capable of putting their differences aside for the common good. In this instance, they couldn’t find a way to move forwards together because I don’t think either guy wanted to play second fiddle to the other. This video basically said neither guy had the tools to bridge that gap and mend that fence, and perhaps also were unwilling to give an inch at that stage in their lives and careers. So a divorce, while unfortunate, was always likely. Do we win the Super Bowl with Smitty and Cam? Well, it’s one of life’s big what ifs for us Panthers fans.
