Revisiting Cam's 4 Sacks Sunday

I finally caved and bought NFL Game Pass yesterday. First thing I wanted to do was take a look at the coaches film feature to see what Cam sees before taking a sack. I'm sure like most of you, I'm literally exhausted from seeing the same news about Hardy, Peterson and Rice.

Sack Number 1 (Picture 1)

As you can see, he has a WR over the middle but by this time 3 Lions players are in his face. Could he attempt this throw? Yes, he could. Is it extremely dangerous? Yes, it is. I believe Cam made the right decision by not forcing it and risking an INT.

Sack Number 2

Now we have a Lions player who has already broken through the middle. Looking downfield you see not a single WR is open or is even looking back at Cam. Again, Cam is sacked and it's hard to say this is fault.

Sack Number 3

Sack number 3 was a missed blocking assignment. The LB had a free run at Cam, Cam stood no chance here.

Sack number 4

Again 3 Lions (both ends and tackle) have broken through, everyone but Cotchery is covered. However if you look at the safety you can tell he has started to make his break towards Cam and it'd be a very tough throw. This play came on 1st down, and there's no sense in risking a red zone INT. Cam took the sack and found Avant on the very next play for a TD.

So as you can see it's pretty easy to sit there and rage on Sunday right after Cam takes a sack. But if you take a look at what Cam's looking at, you can see a lot of it isn't his fault.

Maybe I'm over doing it with these next two but I remember how much people blew up during the playoff game when Cam took back to back sacks in the third Quarter. So I'll just post the pics and you can be the judge

I think the first sack he had two possible options.  It was early though and I believe he just needed to get in the groove.  The other 3 were nice coverage sacks and I agree his options were risky.

I got the version where I can watch live games too. Cost me $280 but it's pretty cool. Was at the shitty vikes game Sunday (don't ask why) so I wanted to watch the Panthers game when I got back.

One thing I notice about a lot of these photos is Cam never has an outlet if the plays break down.  Usually three receivers in the routes and everyone else is blocking.  Guys like Rodgers, Manning, and Brees are so good bc they have someone to check down to, Cam doesn't seem to in any of these photos.

 

Not sure if that is just play design and a coincidence OR its because there isn't a lot of faith in the offensive line to hold blocks so they keep running backs in to help out.

 

It could also be that they have a lot of faith in Cam's ability to elude pressure and make something happen.  If he could have escaped in either situation there is a ton of grass in front of him.

Can't see thepics very well on mobile, but any indication as to who's fault each sack was? Watching the game it looked like all 4 were interior linemen that got beat.

Agree with everything but your first analysis.  He had three options there with a well thrown ball.  But given that it was his first game back, I let those things slide.

Totally and we can't say forsure but look at that first sack he took in the playoff game. Unless the play design was to all run in the endzone and give Cam grass to run, what a horrible play call.

In some of the others Tolbert is his release guy but he's covered. That's where a guy like Seastrunk could come in handy and have alot better chance at shaking a LB than Tolbert does.

Yeah, that was in the first quarter and agree. After sitting for 2 weeks we had to expect some rust.

First sack was on Cam, but I don't think anyone here will judge him for it since he was coming off an injury and he was rusty. 

 

The other 3 there was nothing. he did the right thing taking the sack in those three plays.

First one, he was just late to fire to the top of the screen, but that may have been his 3rd read.

Anticipation, anticipation, anticipation.

If it ain't there, throw it away. Negative plays are/can be a killer. I know, everyone screws up and takes a sack and loses FG range. Well...not everyone does it.

Once you have been in the league long enough you should know/tell when it is time to get rid of the ball. You have to be able to avoid those negative plays.

Rust, rust, rust. I'll take it for last week. And maybe this week. But at some point Cam has to learn anticipation/getting rid of the ball.
