What should I do? Car/money question

So my wife drives a 2011 GMC Acadia we bought new in 2011. In the past couple of months while she is driving, all of the error/check engine lights come on, and the car just dies. She usually has our two kids (toddler and baby) and we live in ATL, so it always does in rush hour traffic.

I have taken it to the GMC dealer to be fixed 3 times now and they have no idea what's wrong with it and every time in pick it up they said they "think they fixed it, but have no way of knowing and can't promise me it won't happen again".

I am not comfortable with my wife driving a car, because it is dangerous and unpredictable.

Lemon laws are typically only good for 2 years after purchase, so we are screwed there.

The factory warranty is fixing to expire, so we are screwed there.

We owe $16,000, and KBB says we could get around $21,000

I would hate to have to buy another car, but feel like I have no choice.

Thoughts?

Have you had the engine control module (ECM) checked at a GMC dealership? It sounds like yours has gone or is going bad and it should be covered if you still have warranty.

If it isn't that, I'm not sure why they can't figure it out? It sounds like they are giving you the runaround while your warranty expires.

You can't really sell it for KBB value if it has major problems like that.

You need to take it to another dealer then.  Or call the area rep and start bitching.  You gotta shake the tree sometimes.

You're correct about the Lemon Laws only covering you for the first 2 years or 24,000 miles so that isn't even an option anymore.

 

However what is your warranty? 3-5 years, 36,000 - 75,000 miles?

 

Given the problem was first diagnosed during the warranty period, if it still persists after the warranty expires, they never resolved the issue so they should be on the hook for repairing the original problem.

 

I agree with what has been said above to go and ruffle a few feathers. It is always good to go to corporate with the name of the person you are dealing with at the dealership. That should light some fire in them.

Take it to the Cadillac place, or another GM dealership. Tell them what's going on.

    • Canales was asked about Freeling at OTAs getting beat by Princely and Scourton.  He basically described the learning curve, and it sounds as if Freeling has a lot to learn before taking the job.  Walker gives us time.  Having said that, Motown talks like he has a few (2-3?) years left---and I would love to see it.   If you look at the contracts, It is a good bet that Hunt and Lewis are extended and given some guaranteed $$$ to lower the cap hit.  Lewis is about 29 and Hunt is 30, I believe.  That gives us about a 3-year window to start grooming their replacements.  Ickey seems to be the person who could be left without furniture in the musical chairs game.  I would move him to guard and use him like a Travelle Wharton--we have a good problem--we could have six or seven starting OL on the roster.  Of course, that won't last long.
    • I see this point and agree--However, someone is going to bite.  In fact, I think there will be some bluffing going on to make the desperate teams raise the stakes.  We shall see.
    • I could see a team like the Jets, Cardinals etc. bid a second round pick, get a year to see where he’s at, and still take a first round QB if he doesn’t show the right stuff. A risk well worth taking. I just wonder how much of a mental toll the last few months have taken on him?
