I'm not sure on this one.  Seems to me if he wanted out of here, he wouldn't of made his "blood and guts" comment, he wouldn't of said to the camera after scoring "Do you think I can still f**king play" (however he put it), and he wouldn't of talked about "being fired" in his media call this week.

If he asked to be released he quit.  He didn't get fired, as he put it.

it seemed to be a staff consensus that smith did more harm than good when it came to helping mentor other receivers, in particular the new ones, and especially the ones with the biggest potential, because he saw them as competition, and you don't help your competition even if he's on your team.

 

for years this problem was outweighed by smith's productivity and the promise of continued years of productivity… but the scales finally tipped on the other side finally, and we are where we are.

 

i can't say enough times that i love steve smith to death and i hope he gets a ring with baltimore and makes the HOF, but all things considered the release was the right move.

 

I am with Kevin on this one.  Not so much because of the results today, but I think it was a mistake to release Smith.  Its not his job to develop other receivers, and I don't believe they would have developed anywhere else.  Certainly haven't showed any evidence of it.

 

 

And he is a worse cap hit now than he would be had we kept him.  We released him, so we still have a lot of dead money on the books and we have to pay the guy that replaced him.  So releasing him cost us more money than it saved, at least for this year.

how would you have been able to tell? how do you quantify effort?

 

you don't think smitty's playing one iota harder in baltimore, or that he had in no way, shape, or form become complacent here, if still capable of producing numbers?
