Steve Smith Is ON WFNZ Having A Confessional, Won't Let the Story End

Why would you even do this after Sunday? You won the game, you played great. You had all the bragging rights in the world.

Now you're back at square one and everybody just thinks you're being pouty. All the face you saved Sunday is now lost again as you've demonstrated it's still eating at you. You've given all the "power" right back to Gettleman by showing what a number his decision did on you.

Dare I say Smitty needs to be the bigger man.

He's winning, getting paid and is getting talked about in the media like it's 2005. I'm even hearing HOF dropped a lot now that he is in Baltimore.

I just can't fathom that we didn't seem to gameplan for him last week. But we effectively shut down CJ Jr two weeks earlier.

It certainly makes sense as to why Steve is so hurt... I said I believed it to be personal on GMan's behalf from the jump.

It also confirms what I've said here plenty before about Rivera... he is like a puppet. He's non-confrontational and what most would consider soft, emotionally.

I think it all adds up and make sense considering everything that has transpired since. I think it's possible that GMan's made the personal insults because 1) he comes off very old-school, 2) he made hurtful references about Smitty's past hoping to gain some leverage for a paycut, and 3) he's very matter-of-fact and felt he could say Smitty was washed up - he's done the same thing with pressers (the comments abt Cam and Smitty during separate pressers before and after the season last year are good evidence).

This is pretty sad though... what I take from it is, Smitty won't be sign in with us to retire anytime soon, or at least while GEttleman is still the GM and Rivera the coach. It's possible he won't even do it after that because JR can't be happy he just aired them out like this.

It doesn't make it any easier for Panther fans either because it confirms there could've been another resolution that worked for everyone... instead he ended up elsewhere and just thoroughly embarrassed us, both on and off the field.

And for thise that think he's bullshitting, go review how Goodell handled the recent Ray Rice fiasco and how he tried to use media to free the NFL of any negligence. The panthers are very selective about who they let in and how it is reported... Rapoport is an NFL shill. I'm pretty sure that report was put out late because GMan's was tired of the beating he was taking in the media pre-game considering Smitty's start.

It only confirms any of that if you believe that the stuff he says happened really happened.

There's no way I buy that even a fraction of that stuff was actually said by anyone involved.

As mentioned previously, Smitty is not the kind of personality that I would expect to give a rational, real life accounting of this story.

It's all about his hurt feelings.

He embarrassed a shitty defensive backfield Sunday.

He embarrassed himself today.

This all makes it easier for me. This makes it abundantly clear Gettleman made the correct decision.

he doesn't have to be THE bigger man in this situation, I'd be alright if he was simply a bigger man than he's currently being.

Seriously, what a giant baby.

Put yourselves in Steve shoes and listen to how things went down. That would hurt any of us.

as someone who drives a 2004 camry and works a 9-5 job i find it really, really, really hard to feel bad for steve smith out of context

in the context of pro football i can understand but i can't personally relate because i'm not a pro athlete.  outside of that context lol at the notion of me feeling bad for a guy who made millions playing a game and will get to retire before 40.

I don't believe for a second that that's how things really went down.

This is true.  People just don't say the types of things that Gettleman supposedly said.

"He said all I do is hit my teammates"  Wut?  Lol

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
