I see a whole lot of sad faces on the huddle as of late. As your MFCEO, I am here to turn that frown upside down.

 

Allow me to inject a little hope into your emo IV drip. Turn down the Evanescence, and read on.

 

This Sunday the Carolina Panthers take on the NFC North's Chicago Bears. For a glance at how well the Panthers could do against the Bears, lets look back to our other NFC North opponent from week 2, the Detroit Lions. The Bears are not all that dissimilar to the Lions on paper. Pocket passer, large receivers, dynamic running back, 4-3 defense, etc....

 

The Panthers defense was able to allow only seven points to the potent Detroit offense. Detroit currently has the 10th ranked offense in the NFL. Chicago has the 16th.

 

Yes, but the Panthers are injured now, right? Yes and no.

 

Yes, Charles Johnson looks like he probably will not play on Sunday. In the game against Detroit, Johnson had 1 tackle. If Horton, Addison, or Ealy can muster a single tackle they will have matched Johnson's production. Mario Addison, on the other hand, registered three tackles, 2.5 sacks, and 4 QB hits. Addison is starting Sunday.

 

The only only other difference on the defensive side of the ball personnel wise is Josh Norman being promoted to starter over Melvin White. This may actually be an improvement against Chicago's large athletic wide outs (if Norman can maintain his composure.)

 

Thomas Davis is the healthiest he has been since the Detroit game where he lead the team with 12 tackles. Although his presence was desperately needed in Baltimore, having him healthy at home this week may be the difference in the game.

 

Defensively, the bottom line is this: Last Sunday, the Bears mustered only 17 points at home against Green Bay, who currently have the 28th ranked defense in the league. The Panthers defense has already proven once this year that they can dominate with the roster available to them this Sunday. Will they? That is entirely up to them.

 

On the offensive side of the ball, there are also reasons to be hopeful.

 

Byron Bell and Nate Chandler have looked horrible in the last two games. The good news is while those games were against  3-4 defenses. Chicago mainly sticks with their base 4-3. Bell and Chandler have performed average to above average against 4-3 defenses this season.

 

Yes, Deangelo Williams is out on Sunday. But he was out against the Lions as well. Jonathan Stewart may be back this week, but he only averaged 2.5 yards per carry against Detroit. Tolbert is also out, but he actually had -5 yards on the day. Stewart, Reaves, and Ogbonnaya may actually give the Panthers more options in play calling against Chicago.

 

Lets not forget Brandon Williams getting his first big shot this week. Richie Brockel is an excellent blocker and is out for this game. The Panthers have been abysmal in short yardage situations where Brockel is mostly used. Brandon Williams could provide a spark to an element of the offense that can't get much worse.

 

Offensive Bottom Line: The Bears have allowed at least 19 points every game this season. Cam Newton, Greg Olsen, and the receiving core are healthy and talented enough to put up touchdowns against Chicago. If Mike Shula can muster a somewhat respectable run game the Panthers should be able to put up 20+ points, enough to win provided the defense plays up to its potential.

 

 

Overall Bottom Line: The Panthers have the roster and the ability to win this game.

 

 

My prediction:

 

Panthers 24

Bears 20

Jeremy, I was talking with my friend about the last two games vs Pitt and Balt.  He said the defensive line isn't the problem right now.  He said because McD plays a soft cover 2 or a cover 2 man 99% of the time, offensive coaches have game planned around this.  They have started doing short drops to eliminate the pass rush completely and we don't have the horses for jam cover or cover 1.  He stated when you start getting beaten underneath 2 things happen: Cbs and safety's tend to creep up, and LBs move back and become less aggressive.  Then, your team is vulnerable to the deep ball, zone runs, etc.  Do you agree with this assessment or do you think it's other reasons?

That actually makes sense! Lol!

Especially our offense getting a break from 3-4s.

Anyway, I think we can get a few turnovers in this game. (WHICH HAS BEEN A HUGE DIFFERENCE) That will be the key to the game. We averaged 3 takeaways a game in the first two and ZERO in the last two. (If Im not mistaken) We obviously lost the last two.....bad.

Not many people will be picking us after the last two weeks. Chicago has a lot of firepower. We have to make that back-fire and force some TOs.

They lack a pass rush. Rodgers put on a clinic for quarterbacking against them. He moved around in the pocket all game and tore them up. I'd love to see cam do the same. GB doesn't have a stellar Oline right now either.

If Rogers can "move around in the pocket," then their Oline is markedly better than ours.

No hard feeling the Bears, but our team is injured, angry and mad, really really mad and you are on our way for the superbowl, our superbowl!

And you know what they say about injured animals? don't stay on their way.

      The only thing I said was he was part of the staff that made part of the decisions, and that I am judging the decisions made by that group as a whole. As assistant GM, you can pretty much guarantee his input held more sway than an intern or the guy that takes coffee requests. Fitterer didn't operate in a vacuum. Neither does Morgan now. While Fitterer did have the ultimate decision, to say that Dan had no input in ranking boards, evaluating FAs, trade offers or anything else would be asinine. We all know he did. Otherwise what the hell was his job as assistant GM? He wouldn't have been kept for 3 years if he was arguing every decision Scott ever made.    And the actual quote was "Morgan has done a bang up job in the draft and FA. Compared to what the last guy did, he is kicking ass and taking names." So is XL kicking ass and Brooks taking names from last years draft or did I get it backwards? We took Wallace over Payton Wilson because he was an injury risk after trading up for a RB with a torn ACL? Which one of the kicking ass and taking names was that?  Maybe we should review the thousands of gameday posts calling for XL to get off the field because he's a bust and can't catch a cold. We could review the posts about Brooks but... And Wilson. He's at 118 tackles this season vs 36 for Wallace.  I gave credit to Dan for a good draft this year. But I'm also not ignoring last year's draft either since he did that one after the last guy too.  That's not a strawman.

      If we keep our guards in tact ($$$) and go with Mays at C, some OT depth would be nice. I think we should be happy about CB with Thornton's development (pre injury) and Smith Wade. I think Ransom is developing nicely, but I would like to see a FS type for situations. We suck at ILB and Edge (as a whole). We should be OK at RB.  I hope we sign Dowdle to a short contract. QB?  There are signs of hope and development.  (I don't like our backup QB) TE?  Good draft for TE, but I think we are developing with Evans, Sanders, and Tremble. WR?  A #2 with Coker and Horn in the slot.  XL?  What is that? We should be good in 2026. Morgan does more than draft.  Free agency has been strong too.  (Just emptying my brain on your comment--sorry)
